June 4 Summit Invitation

by Rob Stephenson last modified 2008-04-22 16:20
In December 2007, The Tech launched The Tech Virtual, a revolutionary new approach to creating exhibit content for museums using the virtual world of Second Life as a platform for content development. Six months later, we've learned a lot about opening up the development of museum content to a global audience using the open source model and the collaborative spirit this model embodies.

Now we are hosting a symposium and roundtable discussion focused on how the open source spirit, social software and virtual worlds are impacting museums in an age of participation. Leaders from the museum and technology worlds will consider the following questions:
  • How can external experts and amateurs play a role in exhibit design?
  • How useful are virtual worlds for museums?
  • How to build and manage an online community.
  • How to foster inter-museum collaboration.

Summit speakers include:

  • Tech Museum President Peter Friess, Ph.D.
  • Keynote speaker Philip Rosedale, Linden Lab founder and Chairman (creators of Second Life)
  • Judges involved in The Tech Virtual's first virtual exhibit design competition
  • Prize-winning virtual exhibit designers (see http://thetechvirtual.org/news for details)
  • Tech staff, including The Tech Virtual "open source curators" Nina Simon and Rob Stephenson
The afternoon will include presentations, a moderated panel discussion, breakout sessions on a variety of topics related to the theme of Digital Democracy in Exhibit Design, and a full audience/group discussion.

Your visit to The Tech for this summit will include the opportunity to see what we believe are the first of their kind in the world: museum exhibits developed originally in the virtual world of Second Life, and then recreated in the physical world of The Tech Museum. We look forward to seeing you on June 4th!
