CounterpART is the combination or singularity of artwork, music, performance, creative or educational event that exists in both RL and SL. Many artists now create art and music for both worlds and "Inside counterpART" delves inside the concept of mixed reality arts by focusing on the interactions of technology, creativity, artist personalities, and creative processes of 6 live events and the people involved with them. This exhibition will be an innovative, interactive, and technological approach to understanding how virtual reality can be used to inspire and promote the creative expression of artists, musicians, and educators.

Art, Film & Music Projects

Yes

There are 4 components to this exhibition.
1) Large video display of Second Life event.
2) Standing touch screen computer display with SL event participants for the audience to interact.
3) Artwork hanging on the wall that captures the counterpART event in a unique way.
4)The exhibit participant.

Upon entering the exhibit, the person will be prompted by audio and sign to interact with the web based standing touch screen display that prompts them to choose an event to watch and touch an event participant (musician, artist, event manager, builder, or audience) to hear and see how that person is involved with the event. After choosing, a video/audio interview will be presented on the display and speakers and the SL event will reload and play on a the wall display. The passive audience participant can watch the SL event, read signs that explain the ideas, and look at the narrative artwork to discover the connections it has with the event.

When the live events happen in SL, it will be broadcast from the SL Tech museum as well as broadcast into the installation.

The live events will be three music concerts (folk, jazz, rock), two inworld art "happenings" (dance and theater) and one educational seminar (how teachers are using SL).

The narrative artwork on the wall will be created by Jeffrey Lipsky, as a commemorative piece that focuses on the SL events. As each new event takes place, Lipsky will watch and make the artwork from his studio. The creation of the artwork will be video documented and uploaded into the installation each month. The artwork will be framed and shipped to San Jose for display (swapped with previous artwork) and given to the museum's permanent collection. The previous artworks will be available in digital format as new events are added.

As a full time artist focusing on documenting the places, people, and events in virtual reality by making narrative artwork, my proposal for the Tech Museum is a very natural progression of my current work. This exhibit will bring together concepts and projects I've been developing for the past two years which include; Rl/SL exhibitions of art, documenting the creative process of artists, creating and managing SL/RL events, educating the public about virtual identity, social networking in virtual reality, and how technology builds bridges between artists, musicians, cultures, and industry.

JUDGING CRITERIA

1. realizable in RL by June 1 by Tech engineers and fabricators.
Yes.. very realizable. All technology is "off the shelf" but used in a way that is unique to this installation. 2 events will be "preloaded" for the installation by the June 1.

2. have a presence as a project both on the website and in Second Life.
Yes... everything about this installation can be presented and streamed to and from the web.

3. relate to the core theme of the role of technology in art, film, or music.
This installation specifically addresses the role of technology in art and music. It also relates to the artists and artwork that rely on the technology to share their creative vision.

4. tie back to an educational "core principle" about art, film, or music. Examples might include "what is a pixel?" "what is audio compression?" etc.
As the event participants are interviewed, they will be asked...
Why they use this technology? How did they learn how to do it? Short play by play of what they are doing to make the event happen. What brought them to SL? There will be other questions as well. 5. relate to the theme of the "spirit of silicon valley." Silicon Vallery has a long tradition of supporting and promoting artist who are using technology to help build bridges between the art and high tech world. I gave a lecture at IBM' Almaden in Silicon Valley in 2007 that expresses this idea.
