- The character for fire is an abstraction of three units of fire, which can be vividly shown as three fire prims in SL. These burning flames help the learner make a strong mental connection to the abstract symbol---a powerful learning experience! The character for rising flame is composed of two FIRE characters placed spatially one on top of the other; this vertical arrangement suggests the direction or movement of the rising fire. The SL environment makes it possible to dynamically demonstrate this rising-flame imagery. In our Entity-Relation model, the learner sees that the entity, fire, is intimately related to the entity, rising-flame. In fact, the latter is derived from the former. In linguistics, such construction is called reduplication. This parent-child relationship is also called a hierarchical relationship. We call this way of learning the "Unfoldment" method of relating one concept to another. Such a learning is more powerful than traditional rote memorization.
