Take modern art works and begin with the subject as a real life image and then progress through several stages of abstraction to arrive at the image the painter created.

Identify a collection of modern art works that represent the various schools of painting in recent history. Starting with impressionism, show the image becoming the piece of art (fairly easy for everyone). Then move through the more advanced schools of art that the novice observer will have more difficulty understanding. For example, migrating a Picasso from the original model to the finished painting will help people better understand how the artists eye and imagination is interpreting the real life image.
