Interaction

by Nina Simon last modified 2008-02-28 10:43

Here is how people use the exhibit, and what do they do, from start to finish.

How are people attracted to the exhibit?

  • First, people hear the 'song' playing.
  • As they walk closer, there is a strong visual component that invites further investigation
  • Closer still, they can see that the 'song' is arranged by the active 'notes' and that a cycling trigger plays the active notes as it passes by each measure.

What is the initial interaction?  What happens when a visitor approaches the exhibit?
  • Upon realizing that the song is based on active notes, they can touch a note and it will light up.
  • The next time the trigger passes, it will play the note they just activated.
  • They can then turn more notes on and start creating a composition, or turn other notes off, etc.
  • They then notice that a note seemingly turns on or off by itself...  sometimes in reaction to the decision they just made - as if it were somehow intelligent.
  • Descriptive text, or a nearby computer monitor, describes that this installation is also being effected by a virtual counterpart in SL - in real time.

What is the main interaction?  What do people do and how does the exhibit respond while they are playing/using it?  How long does the whole experience take?  Is it social or individual?
  • The experience is open-ended, both in terms of length of engagement and/or social interaction.  It can be just as easily experience alone, but the more 'composers' interacting, the more dynamic the experience becomes.

How does the experience end?  What's the reward?  How do people know when they are done?
  • The song never ends, but the visitors engagement ends whenever they choose.
  • The ongoing, cyclical nature of the composition will encourage visitors to return again toward the end of their visit to the museum - in order to see how the composition has changed in their absense.

How does the exhibit reset for the next player, both in the case when the previous user goes through the whole thing or leaves early?
  • It doesn't reset, but constantly evolves.
  • After experiencing the installation, visitors are invited to go to the Wikisonic web-page from their home, where they can access a timeline and listen to the composition they made while they were there and listen to other compositions made throughout the days/weeks.
  • They can download any part of the song they like, re-mix it, improve it, add to it, do voice-over, add video, or whatever they want...  then upload it back to the site for others to enjoy, use, remix, etc.
