CRITERIA

Description of how our entry meets the project requirements.

1. Have a presence as a project both on the website and in Second Life:  We have used both the website and the Second Life workshop to share ideas, collaborate and discuss possible methods of implementation.  In addition to these portals, collaboration around Wikisonic has already extended into other collaborative media such as YouTube videos, Flickr screenshots, blog posts that published Wikisonic and more.

2. Relate to the core theme of the role of technology in art, film, or music:   This installation seamlessly blends technology, art and music.  In an artistic sense, the visual display of this installation, both in SL and in RL is a dynamic, and colorful representation of the collaborative musical score.  Wikisonic will implement cutting edge technology, bridging a virtual space and a real space in a non-literal, semi-synchronous way.  In this way, we are able to achieve the much sought-after and often discussed bridge between the two worlds.  Musically, the concept of collaborative musical composition is on the forefront of both theory and practice, with many such experiments and projects underway in various formats.  Wikisonic touches on some of the methods already being utilized through web-based musical collaboration, but the tangible, interactive components are unprecedented in collaborative musical composition, and should set the stage for some exciting and interesting explorations that will reach beyond this installation as a case-study in collaborative composition.

3. Tie back to an educational "core principle" about art, film, or music.  In its earliest manifestation, education was not an original part of the Wikisonic installation.  However, with the installation of the virtual prototype, it has become clear that this method of musical composition is highly educational on many different levels.  Mainly, enabling participants to immediately experience the audible effect of decisions they make and apply to the ever-changing musical score helps non-musically trained visitors understand how music is arranged on a staff, and how the composition of notes on a score effects the outcome of the song.  By participating in this creative process, visitors are challenged to collaboratively create  a composition that sounds 'good'.  However, they cannot depend on their ideas alone, but must invite and react to the decisions others are making, in real time, toward the creation of the song.  In this way, Wikisonic teaches the dynamic of team work and collaboration as well.

4. Relate to the theme of the "spirit of silicon valley."  The spirit of Silicon Valley is innovation, and the discovery and advance of technology capable of producing creative opportunities we had never thought possible before.  The advent and explosive growth of virtual spaces is a strong undercurrent in the Valley, and explorations like Wikisonic explore the cutting edge of those worlds, and connect those experiences with the real world in an accessible, playful, interactive, memorable, collaborative and fun installation.
