UcanTu meeting, April 29, 2008

[10:04]  Shakini Parnass: we've narrowed the list to 20 innovations from 175
[10:04]  Shakini Parnass: that was a big job!
[10:04]  Shakini Parnass: we are hoping that some of you will be up for the next phase
[10:05]  Shakini Parnass: of coming up with ideas for what visitors will do as they interact and learn about these technologies
[10:05]  Shakini Parnass: RL to SL to RL
[10:05]  Shakini Parnass: are any of the projects listed so far resonating with anyone?
[10:05]  Shakini Parnass: thanks lydia for sending out the announcements for this!
[10:05]  Garvie Garzo: yes, i like ALL of the justice pnes
[10:05]  Garvie Garzo: but especially witness
[10:06]  Garvie Garzo: and the fog collector is cool
[10:06]  Lydia Milner: youre welcome :)
[10:06]  Shakini Parnass: yeah, thats pretty amazing way to put power into people's hands directly
[10:06]  Dancers Yao: /i like witness also
[10:06]  Garvie Garzo: the feet are kind of compelling too
[10:06]  Garvie Garzo: ity's definitely a wide assortmant lol
[10:07]  Lydia Milner: i like the kick start pump and the ed ones
[10:07]  Shakini Parnass: i was thinking of having a big pile of feet, canes, crutches, etc to make a big impact
[10:07]  Shakini Parnass: we have an amazing video from the UN also
[10:07]  Shakini Parnass: that shows kids playing on a soccer field
[10:07]  Shakini Parnass: when a landmine goes off
[10:08]  Garvie Garzo: omg
[10:08]  Shakini Parnass: the message is: if landmines happened here, would you allow this to happen?
[10:08]  Shakini Parnass: it was banned from the tv networks in the us
[10:08]  Shakini Parnass: no one was willing to show it
[10:08]  Garvie Garzo: not surprising
[10:08]  Shakini Parnass: very powerful way to get the message through
[10:08]  Shakini Parnass: but yes, not surprising at all
[10:09]  Garvie Garzo: well. i'd be interested in anty ANTI landmine stuff
[10:09]  Lydia Milner: can we use any pics/vids etc from RL in the SL exhibits?
[10:09]  Shakini Parnass: yes
[10:09]  Shakini Parnass: you can use anything from the real life projects that you'd like
[10:09]  Lydia Milner: good thanks
[10:09]  Shakini Parnass: i'm working on contacting the laureates
[10:09]  Garvie Garzo: really?
[10:10]  Shakini Parnass: yes
[10:10]  Garvie Garzo: so the eselections are just suggestions?
[10:10]  Garvie Garzo: and the WHOLE ofthe tech awardsare fair game?
[10:10]  Shakini Parnass: no
[10:10]  Garvie Garzo: ok
[10:10]  Shakini Parnass: i just got a call brb
[10:11]  Lorenza Rokocoko: the Laureates had been selected
[10:11]  Lorenza Rokocoko: very carefully, so we have to work with the selection that Shakini gave you
[10:11]  Shakini Parnass: so the list of 21 projects are the ones we'd like you to work from
[10:12]  Shakini Parnass: those are the ones that are going to be in the real exhibit
[10:12]  Shakini Parnass: here's a notecard with info about the upcoming exhibit
[10:13]  Mathieu Questi: thx
[10:13]  You: when you create a new UcanTu project, it will ask you which of the selected Tech Award topics you want to address
[10:13]  Lydia Milner: ok
[10:13]  Shakini Parnass: originally we were thinking that we would build the set of the exhibit in SL as well
[10:14]  Shakini Parnass: but we're not going to do that now
[10:14]  Shakini Parnass: we want to save the servers for the actual exhibit experiences
[10:14]  Lydia Milner: we build in the same frames again then?
[10:14]  Shakini Parnass: yes
[10:14]  Lydia Milner: ok thanks
[10:14]  You: So to do a UcanTu exhibit, you create a UcanTu exhibit project, just like Art Film & Music
[10:14]  Shakini Parnass: stephe tried to keep things fairly similar to AFM
[10:14]  Garvie Garzo: why don't we redesign them a little bit?
[10:15]  Garvie Garzo: bamboos poles and rope ties or something
[10:15]  Shakini Parnass: thats fine to do that
[10:15]  You: to avoid confusion, we're calling the selected Tech Award projects "topics"
[10:15]  Lydia Milner: you can retexture and shape them any which ways, as a lot fo ppl did with AFM
[10:16]  Shakini Parnass: one concern in RL is not to make things seem too third worldly even tho many of these projects originated there
[10:16]  Garvie Garzo: ok
[10:16]  You: good idea, Garvie
[10:16]  Shakini Parnass: but that being said, i like bamboo, so no problem there
[10:16]  Shakini Parnass: we're actually thinking of having latticework overhead
[10:16]  Shakini Parnass: much like you would find in a marketplace setting
[10:16]  Shakini Parnass: to give the feel of being outdoors while you're indoors
[10:17]  Garvie Garzo: yeah, since it's a village i think we should get outdoorsy fromn the start
[10:17]  Shakini Parnass: with sunlight filtering through from above
[10:17]  Shakini Parnass: as you wander through the exhibits
[10:17]  Lydia Milner: that sounds nice
[10:17]  Lorenza Rokocoko: If you research about every topic, you'll find the way to display your ideas in the exhibit
[10:17]  Lydia Milner: yes good point
[10:17]  Shakini Parnass: just to be clear -- the one missive i was given from the museum was to create an "urban" marketplace
[10:18]  Mathieu Questi: sorry
[10:18]  Shakini Parnass: which probably wouldn't be a village but more of a dense, city feel
[10:18]  Shakini Parnass: some of this will be achieved through projections, sound, etc.
[10:18]  Garvie Garzo: ok
[10:19]  You: think generic, ethnic, urban environment
[10:19]  Garvie Garzo: backdrops are easy, photorealistic prim savers
[10:19]  Garvie Garzo: and sounds are VERY easy in SL
[10:19]  Shakini Parnass: conveying the energy of the space, lots of people, traffic, animals, etc
[10:19]  Shakini Parnass: its a wide open slate
[10:20]  Lorenza Rokocoko: Garvie, do you remember your project about "being in other people shoes"? Is very similar the approach, but you'll have topic pre-selected, think in an environment to impact audience
[10:20]  Garvie Garzo: yes
[10:20]  Lydia Milner: Shakini, can you remind me what kind of dates we are working with please?
[10:20]  Lydia Milner: The hall shodl be cleared by end of this Thursday
[10:20]  Shakini Parnass: yes
[10:21]  Shakini Parnass: our first "review" of the projects will be june 1st
[10:21]  Shakini Parnass: 2nd review july 1st
[10:21]  Shakini Parnass: final selection july 31st
[10:21]  Lydia Milner: great thanks
[10:21]  Garvie Garzo: wow, that's fast
[10:21]  Shakini Parnass: it is fast, the whole project is on a fast track
[10:22]  Shakini Parnass: mainly because a lot of these exhibits already exist
[10:22]  Shakini Parnass: sorry, the exhibits don't exist
[10:22]  Shakini Parnass: but the technologies exist
[10:22]  Garvie Garzo: lol
[10:22]  Shakini Parnass: Art film and music only had a few months development as well
[10:22]  Garvie Garzo: true
[10:22]  Shakini Parnass: less than 3 months to create prototypes in RL
[10:22]  Shakini Parnass: the gallery space is being renovated now
[10:22]  Garvie Garzo: i still find that hardto believe
[10:23]  Shakini Parnass: avi just did a playtest with the musical chairs
[10:23]  Shakini Parnass: the kids really dug it
[10:23]  Garvie Garzo: yes, she told us
[10:23]  Shakini Parnass: and played it in a variety of ways
[10:23]  Garvie Garzo: sound like itwas a success
[10:23]  Lydia Milner: :)
[10:23]  Shakini Parnass: definitely
[10:24]  Lorenza Rokocoko: Looking good!
[10:24]  Garvie Garzo: ``:)
[10:25]  Shakini Parnass: so -- a number of you mentioned that you are interested inw itness
[10:26]  Shakini Parnass: any thoughts about what you might do to run with that?
[10:26]  Mathieu Questi: are you scientists ?
[10:26]  You: I am
[10:26]  Shakini Parnass: some of us are exhibit designers
[10:26]  Mathieu Questi: ok
[10:26]  Shakini Parnass: some are technologists
[10:26]  Garvie Garzo: not exactly.. we build exhibits for a museum.. it's sort of science-based
[10:26]  Shakini Parnass: musicians, artistis, designers
[10:26]  Mathieu Questi: ok, I had already visited the tech behind you
[10:27]  Lorenza Rokocoko: I'm an educator, I do content development for exhibits
[10:27]  Shakini Parnass: the idea is to bring people together to collaborate on new exhibit ideas for an upcoming RL exhibit related to our tech awards projects
[10:27]  Mathieu Questi: ok
[10:27]  Mathieu Questi: you're the team to build it ?
[10:28]  Shakini Parnass: by lydia - thanks again
[10:28]  Shakini Parnass: as far as building the exhibits
[10:28]  Shakini Parnass: the technologies exist
[10:28]  Shakini Parnass: we are asking the SL community to help with prototyping ideas
[10:28]  Lorenza Rokocoko: Is a collaborative project, The Tech invites the SL community
[10:28]  Shakini Parnass: for the way visitors in RL will interact with these technologies
[10:28]  Mathieu Questi: ok
[10:29]  Shakini Parnass: all the projects are posted on the website at thetechvirtual.org
[10:29]  Shakini Parnass: these are the topics that we would like to create experiences with in SL and RL
[10:30]  Shakini Parnass: if we can take inspiration from SL to RL, that is the intention
[10:30]  Shakini Parnass: it worked really well for the art, film and music projects
[10:30]  Shakini Parnass: so this is the next phase
[10:30]  Shakini Parnass: working with topics that use technology for the benefit of humanity
[10:31]  You: I t would be great if some brave soul would create the first UcanTu project
[10:31]  You: then hopefully others will follow
[10:31]  Garvie Garzo: i will soon i promise
[10:31]  You: cool ;-)
[10:31]  Shakini Parnass: yeah!
[10:31]  Shakini Parnass: any thoughts about which topic?
[10:32]  Garvie Garzo: i just wanted to come today.. later i will THINK about possibilities
[10:32]  Shakini Parnass: thats fine, there's still lots of time
[10:32]  Lorenza Rokocoko: you're very creative Garvie
[10:32]  Garvie Garzo: i almost don't careat this point.. but an idea should pop outthat just screams do me
[10:32]  Garvie Garzo: and me being me, i'll likely tackle at least three
[10:32]  Shakini Parnass: thats a good way to go
[10:32]  Lydia Milner: lol
[10:33]  Garvie Garzo: i like tyo think for about 3 weeks
[10:33]  Garvie Garzo: and tyhen do all the building in 2 days or so
[10:33]  Shakini Parnass: excellent
[10:33]  Garvie Garzo: and then modify for as long as there is time
[10:33]  Garvie Garzo: maybe i'll start by trying to think of one from each category
[10:34]  Garvie Garzo: oh, and i gave mathieu the url
[10:34]  Mathieu Questi: yes
[10:34]  Shakini Parnass: thanx
[10:34]  Mathieu Questi: merci
[10:34]  Garvie Garzo: de rien
[10:35]  Garvie Garzo: shakini, do you have any thoughts on the correct proportion ofjust illustrating ot rebuilding the projects...
[10:35]  Garvie Garzo: as opposed to looser, more metaphorical interpretations of them?
[10:36]  Shakini Parnass: i think for now, being metaphorical is okay
[10:36]  Shakini Parnass: especially in the thinking/design phase
[10:36]  Garvie Garzo: i know that the main thrust is supposed to be to INSPIREpeople to action...
[10:37]  Shakini Parnass: exactly
[10:37]  Shakini Parnass: however that can happen is the most important emphasis
[10:37]  Lydia Milner: how big a part in the design process do you want the wiki to play?
[10:37]  Shakini Parnass: but also just affecting people is okay too
[10:37]  You: I would guess you could a) explain how it works, b) show its importance and impact, c) make it connect with the viistor's life
[10:38]  Garvie Garzo: ok, that's helpful
[10:38]  Shakini Parnass: it also helps explain things that might not be obvious to everyone
[10:38]  Shakini Parnass: i.e. if its REALLY metaphorical!
[10:39]  Shakini Parnass: one thing we'd like is for people to come away with memories of their experiences in this exhibit
[10:39]  Shakini Parnass: that will stay with them for awhile
[10:39]  Garvie Garzo: ok, that's promising
[10:39]  Lorenza Rokocoko: once you read about the topics the ideas will pop up, and you'll find the way to explain them in an interactive experience
[10:39]  Shakini Parnass: since many of these technologies are developed in places under radically different circumstances
[10:40]  Garvie Garzo: so, in some instances a shock or difficult exhibit is ok?
[10:40]  Shakini Parnass: we'd also like to tie in with more local concerns
[10:40]  You: the real message under it all is that the world has a lot of BIG problems, but it's not that hard to make a difference
[10:40]  Shakini Parnass: shocking is okay
[10:40]  Shakini Parnass: political is okay
[10:40]  Shakini Parnass: nothing is off the table
[10:40]  Garvie Garzo: i mean, we're not necessarily trying toi entertain, but to enlighten and MOVE people.. right?
[10:40]  Garvie Garzo: ok, good
[10:40]  Shakini Parnass: whether or not it will ultimately make it into RL, i can't say
[10:40]  Garvie Garzo: and so it goes
[10:40]  Shakini Parnass: but i don't want people to feel censored in any way
[10:40]  Garvie Garzo: ok
[10:41]  Shakini Parnass: just like that UN video
[10:41]  Shakini Parnass: maybe we'll show it in the museum
[10:41]  Shakini Parnass: even though the tv networks won't
[10:41]  Shakini Parnass: the parents might have a problem with it
[10:41]  Shakini Parnass: but we wouldn't know until we put it out there
[10:41]  Garvie Garzo: stephe, is it possible to play machinima here yet?
[10:42]  You: ideally, we'd like the exhibits that are finally selected to tie in with the creators of the particular technologies
[10:42]  Lydia Milner: tie in how Stephe?
[10:42]  Shakini Parnass: i think he's working on that
[10:42]  You: "play machinima here yet" ? in the RL gallery?
[10:42]  Garvie Garzo: yes
[10:43]  Garvie Garzo: a link to youtube say
[10:43]  You: no, I visited it yesterday and it's all wet paint and drop cloths
[10:43]  Shakini Parnass: we would like to highlight the stories of the creators of these technologies
[10:43]  You: :-(
[10:43]  Garvie Garzo: lol;
[10:43]  Shakini Parnass: and be able to convey that in some way if possible
[10:43]  Shakini Parnass: the stories of most of these projects are really amazing
[10:43]  Shakini Parnass: some of them are hard to get across, particularly to a western audience
[10:43]  Lydia Milner: thanks Shakini, I havent looked atht eh ucantu section of web on much detail, their stories are all there also?
[10:43]  Garvie Garzo: a machinima would be an excellent way to do that
[10:44]  Garvie Garzo: slideshow maybe too
[10:44]  Shakini Parnass: there are links to their websites, videos, etc. that give more of the backstory
[10:44]  Lydia Milner: great thx
[10:44]  Shakini Parnass: for each topic
[10:44]  Shakini Parnass: some of the tech awards videos are brief synopsis of the projects
[10:45]  Shakini Parnass: that are rather slick productions
[10:45]  Shakini Parnass: these were done for the tech awards gala event audience
[10:45]  Garvie Garzo: nice
[10:45]  Shakini Parnass: santa clara university has done some more in depth interviews with some of the laureates (i.e. fundaction terram)
[10:45]  Shakini Parnass: where you can really get a lot more detail about the projects and why they were initiated
[10:46]  Shakini Parnass: but you'll have to dig a little to get to more of this info
[10:46]  You: on the Website, start here: http://thetechvirtual.org/projects/ucantu
[10:46]  Shakini Parnass: hi gaberoonie
[10:46]  Gaberoonie Szondi: heyas
[10:47]  Gaberoonie Szondi: ty
[10:47]  Shakini Parnass: hopefully all this will be more clear as you spend a little time browsing around the site
[10:48]  Lorenza Rokocoko: Then you'll find the conections between topics, and the relevance of each one
[10:48]  Shakini Parnass: i really appreciate your interest in getting involved and want to thank everyone for coming today
[10:48]  Shakini Parnass: does anyone else have any questions?
[10:48]  Shakini Parnass: maybe after you've had a chance to browse through a bit more
[10:49]  Shakini Parnass: we can start brainstorming some ideas here in these meetings
[10:49]  Lorenza Rokocoko: And in the wiki, of course
[10:49]  Shakini Parnass: so we can start moving forward
[10:50]  Shakini Parnass: same time, same station next week!
[10:50]  Garvie Garzo: yes, brainstorming was very helpful last time
[10:50]  Dancers Yao: /thanks
[10:50]  Shakini Parnass: thanks again for coming everyone -- a bientot!
[10:50]  Lorenza Rokocoko: Thank you Shakini, see you next week!
[10:50]  Lydia Milner: thanks
[10:50]  You: I'll put this discussion on the website
