Exhibit designers 2008.07.11
Exhibit Designers meeting July 11
[8:56] You: good moring dancers
[8:56] You: *morning*
[8:58] Dancers Yao: Good morning Stephe - Going to try standing to see if it cuts down on memory usage if I'm away from the group. Thanks for the email - I just answered
[8:58] Lydia Milner is Online
[9:01] Lydia Milner: Hi Dancers, Hi Stephe :)
[9:01] Dancers Yao: HI Lydia
[9:01] You: good evening Lydia
[9:02] TJ Asp: morning all
[9:02] Lydia Milner: Hi TJ :)
[9:02] Dancers Yao: Lydia - standing to conserve computer memory. Hope your family is well. Computer coming Monday. Looking forward to a party.
[9:02] Moya Janus is Online
[9:03] Lydia Milner: lol I was just going to ask you if you had a date for that!
[9:04] Dancers Yao: As soon as I know it's running and I can finally do the exhibit!
[9:04] TJ Asp: oops.. looks like you're editing that Stephe.. hope my clicking on it didn't mess you up.
[9:05] You: hi, Tj, how are you?
[9:06] TJ Asp: i'm good
[9:06] You: Dancers don't you want to sit down and join us?
[9:06] Lydia Milner: lol she cant
[9:07] Dancers Yao: I'd love to - but very low on compuer memory - better away from the other avatars. New computer on its way ....
[9:07] You: sorry , Dancers ,just read the chat. But does standing really make any difference?
[9:07] TJ Asp: Try zooming in on the floor.
[9:08] TJ Asp: That alwasy boosts my frame rate a bit.
[9:08] You: also good to see if we have ants
[9:08] Lydia Milner: lol
[9:08] Dancers Yao: I think it's being away from the other avatars and table. I think my computer thinks it needs to show all the details - and doesn't know its own limitations
[9:09] You: as Lydia suggested, when you get your new computer we'll throw you a party and welcome you back into the fold
[9:10] Lydia Milner: definitely :)
[9:10] You: TJ, did you get your certificates yet in the mail?
[9:10] TJ Asp: Yes I did, thanks.
[9:10] You: great
[9:10] Dancers Yao: Thanks - looking forward to really being here.
[9:11] You: I think I mentioned it before, but at the Tech we're looking to hire someone as a Virtual Community Manager
[9:12] You: right now I'm trying to do the work that used to be done by 3 ppl, and not doing a very good job of anything :-(
[9:12] You: I need help
[9:12] Lydia Milner: you're doing great :)
[9:12] You: tell your friends if they might be interested in the gig
[9:12] Lydia Milner: The job is a wonderful opportunity to really do something with SL!
[9:13] TJ Asp: has the list of ucan2 projects changed this week?
[9:13] You: catch is that it is not a telecommuting job - it requires being in San Jose
[9:13] Dancers Yao: Stephe - you're doing terrific.
[9:14] TJ Asp: I don't see the wind/solar/diesel power system listed anymore.
[9:14] You: thx, but things need to be better
[9:15] Dancers Yao: Where is the job listing posted - I know people in SJ - who may know someone
[9:15] You: umm, just s mo
[9:16] You: here it is: http://thetech.org/about/jobs/index.php?id=327
[9:16] Dancers Yao: thanks
[9:17] You: So UcanTu has 3 more weeks to run
[9:17] You: TJ, are you interested in doing something for UcanTu?
[9:18] You: bif Prize$$$
[9:18] You: big
[9:18] TJ Asp: I have a backgroud in remote power, I thought I might be able to put something togther.
[9:18] You: cool
[9:18] TJ Asp: But I don't see that listed anymore.
[9:18] TJ Asp: I thought it was there earlier this week.
[9:19] You: you mean like off-the-grid power?
[9:19] TJ Asp: I've toyed with the idea of putting together a model remote power system for Etopia.
[9:19] TJ Asp: yes
[9:19] Lydia Milner: Hi trinity :)
[9:19] You: hi, Trinity
[9:19] Trinity Coulter: hello :)
[9:19] TJ Asp: photovoltaics/wind/diesel integrated...
[9:19] TJ Asp: possibly solar/grid interface
[9:20] Bjorlyn Loon is Online
[9:20] You: Trinity we were just talking about the UcanTu exhibition and competition
[9:20] Trinity Coulter: oh how neat :)
[9:20] TJ Asp: I comissioned a 5kw grid interface rooftop solar system for the DOT in Baltimore MD several years ago.
[9:21] Trinity Coulter: i'll just listen for a minute, the event listing sounded interesting
[9:21] You: wow, that's serious stuff
[9:21] TJ Asp: I did the data aquistion and interface for it and then went down after it was installed and turned it on. :-)
[9:21] Trinity Coulter accepted your inventory offer.
[9:21] Trinity Coulter accepted your inventory offer.
[9:21] TJ Asp: And I had a great time at the first wind farm in Antarctica back in the early 90's
[9:21] Trinity Coulter accepted your inventory offer.
[9:22] Trinity Coulter accepted your inventory offer.
[9:22] TJ Asp: 3 3kw wind turbines. 5 kw of PV and 3 Israeli built closed-cycle oil fired turbines.
[9:22] Trinity Coulter: ty Stephe
[9:22] You: that's serious stuff!
[9:23] TJ Asp: It was nice little company in Vermont. who woulda thunk it
[9:24] Lydia Milner: that sounds intersting work
[9:24] You: well the Blue Energy Tech awardee was on the list until recently, when Shakini the curator began feeling a budget crunch
[9:24] TJ Asp: ah
[9:24] You: and she had to scale back her plans somewhat
[9:24] Lydia Milner: woulsnt it be easier to limit the number of projects to be built/chosen, not limit the ideas at the beginining?
[9:25] You: Lydia knows all about it
[9:25] Lydia Milner: lol
[9:25] You: But if you have a great idea, I would go ahead and build it anyway
[9:25] You: there are some other alternative power projects still listed
[9:26] TJ Asp: wind up radio
[9:26] TJ Asp: i wouldn't need a whole booth for that :-)
[9:26] You: Solar Sailor, a solar/ diesel ship
[9:27] You: barefoot classroom is teaching folks in Nepal to install solar, among other skills
[9:27] Lydia Milner: Stephe you replaced 3 brochures and left one on the end, shall I remove it if it is not up to date?
[9:28] Lydia Milner: I have started doing something on that but youa re welcome to join in or do another one
[9:28] You: i think I updated them all, but better make sure
[9:28] Lydia Milner: there are 16 now?
[9:28] Lydia Milner: oh sorry you were talking aobut brochures
[9:28] Lydia Milner: the one far from you still has my name on it so not up to date
[9:30] TJ Asp: lol figures.
[9:30] TJ Asp: that's the one I clicked on :-)
[9:30] You: ok, that should fix them
[9:31] Lydia Milner: looks good
[9:32] You: so, TJ, if you would prfer to work on the Blue Energy one I can resurrect it ;-)
[9:32] TJ Asp: no kidding?
[9:33] TJ Asp: my thoughts were to model a complete power system...
[9:33] TJ Asp: PV/wind/diesel and the integration components...
[9:33] You: I can't guarantee it will make it into the show this round, but of course there is not guarantee on that for anybody or any project
[9:33] TJ Asp: and then have some loads that would drain the batteries slowly...
[9:34] TJ Asp: i probably need to limit the scope a bit to keep it manageable
[9:34] TJ Asp: maybe a wind up radio isn't such a bad idea :-)
[9:34] Trinity Coulter: some people are looking at high energy capacitors for use in remote places because they work in better ways than chemical batteries
[9:34] TJ Asp: I didn't realize Freeplay had gotten a tech grant.
[9:35] You: We also have a "Green by Design" ehxhibition, so we can always find use for a great solar exhibit, I shouod think
[9:36] You: Qion Ning had started working on Freeplay and I gave her a lot of pictures, but I think she kind of stalled
[9:36] TJ Asp: Where does one get a good "winding up the radio" animation?
[9:37] You: Lydia, you were looking for animators, find anybody?
[9:37] You: If you start or join a project, you can post a help wanted notice
[9:37] Alisa Cleanslate: Hi, sorry to be so late.
[9:38] Trinity Coulter: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Supercapacitors_chart.svg
[9:38] You: the Website also has a skills brokerage where you can lok to see whio has animation skills
[9:38] You: hi Alisa
[9:38] Alisa Cleanslate: hi everyone
[9:38] Lydia Milner: Hi Alisa :)
[9:38] Dancers Yao: Hi Alisa..sent you an email this morning
[9:39] Alisa Cleanslate: I'll check. Just got back from out.
[9:39] Alisa Cleanslate: I just wanted to say that i have some time the next few weeks, and would like to help Dancers and Lydia.
[9:39] Lydia Milner: :) that sounds great, thank you Alisa
[9:40] You: great
[9:40] Lydia Milner: I have done some more work but am still very busy in RL
[9:41] Dancers Yao: Alisa, yes thanks so much.we have the server...thx to Stephe

[9:41] Draxtor Despres is Offline
[9:41] TJ Asp: Trin; there's an outdated link on that page you just posted
[9:41] TJ Asp: this seems to work though: http://www.maxwell.com/ultracapacitors/
[9:41] Alisa Cleanslate: Yay
[9:42] Alisa Cleanslate: I've got the directions for the screen, so will try that next.
[9:43] Alisa Cleanslate: I also made a very primitive fog machine for FogQuest.
[9:43] You: the FogQuest screen is neat but it needa a collector
[9:44] You: Hi, Greenberg, come join us
[9:44] Alisa Cleanslate: Do we have a texture of the fog screen?
[9:44] You: we're just talking about the UcanTu competitiona dn exhibitionm
[9:45] Greenberg Felisimo: Hello to all.
[9:45] Greenberg Felisimo accepted your inventory offer.
[9:45] Alisa Cleanslate: The other screen I meant for Dancers videos.
[9:45] Alisa Cleanslate: Hello Greenberg
[9:45] Greenberg Felisimo accepted your inventory offer.
[9:46] Greenberg Felisimo: So what is under discussion.
[9:46] Greenberg Felisimo accepted your inventory offer.
[9:46] You: well TJ was talking about his experience in solar power
[9:46] SC Ireland is Online
[9:47] You: Trinity, are you a burner? (loking at your profile)
[9:47] Dancers Yao: Alisa - do you know if we use the same default media texture in the sandbox as in the Parkside exhibit space here?
[9:47] Alisa Cleanslate: I don't know that yet.
[9:47] You: not sure, but we'll try it and see what happens
[9:48] Lydia Milner: Sorry Ive been away, fogquest screen?
[9:48] Draxtor Despres is Online
[9:48] You: it looks great
[9:48] Lydia Milner: nneds a collector?
[9:48] Lydia Milner: stillre ading
[9:48] You: all it needs is a collector
[9:48] Dancers Yao: Alisa - will you have a media screen - or should I try to put one up?
[9:49] Trinity Coulter: no, i'm just friends with one, Stephe
[9:49] Greenberg Felisimo accepted your inventory offer.
[9:49] Alisa Cleanslate: Dancers - I will try to make the screen.
[9:49] Moya Janus is Offline
[9:50] You: So here's a question for you all: the UcanTu exhibits are supposed to inspire visitors
[9:50] Trinity Coulter: i have an simple screen that is easy setup
[9:50] Trinity Coulter: depending on what you need
[9:50] Alisa Cleanslate: Bless you.
[9:50] You: don't just stand there -- DO SOMETHING
[9:50] Dancers Yao: Great thx
[9:50] You: so how do you make an exhibit inspiring?
[9:50] Lydia Milner: http://www.fogquest.org/projects.shtml
[9:51] Alisa Cleanslate: Fun, then New Idea - Aaha
[9:51] Lydia Milner: aLisa there are alot of fogquest pics here but not v good qualtiy, prob all that fog lol
[9:51] Trinity Coulter: i would think it depends on the exhibit, Stephe
[9:51] You: look through the fogquest newsletters for more picsw
[9:52] Lydia Milner: touch a primary need that anyone can relate to
[9:52] Alisa Cleanslate: I'm way behind now, I apologise, but will talk to you about what's needed.
[9:52] TJ Asp: anyone?
[9:52] Lydia Milner: lol i've been afk being a pirate, still trying to catch up
[9:52] TJ Asp: not every exhibit will inspire every person
[9:53] You: for sure
[9:53] Lydia Milner: too strong and youre being preached to, subtel, lingering thought
[9:53] TJ Asp: do you really mean to inspire? or involve?
[9:53] Lydia Milner: both i think
[9:53] You: I came across a book about what makes things memorable: Chip & Dan Heath: Made to Stick
[9:54] Lydia Milner: oh a fog machine sounds interesting
[9:54] You: they have an interesting framework that might help with inspiring
[9:54] TJ Asp: explain, demonstrate, do.. isn't that the standard procedure?
[9:54] TJ Asp: for making something memorable
[9:54] Alisa Cleanslate: Fun first, then the other.
[9:55] TJ Asp: i guess you have to preceed that with "entice" :-)
[9:55] Alisa Cleanslate: You did it!
[9:55] You: they have an acronym SUCCES (I guess they flunked spelling)
[9:55] You: SUCCES: Simple, Unexpected, Concreteness, Credibility, Emotion and Stories
[9:55] TJ Asp: lol
[9:55] Alisa Cleanslate: Cool
[9:55] TJ Asp: I could never remember all that. :-)
[9:56] Alisa Cleanslate: We have to make something for the last S
[9:56] You: http://www.chaosscenario.com/main/files/CHAOSstick.pdf
[9:56] You: stories are v. important
[9:57] Lydia Milner: good acronym
[9:57] Lydia Milner: oh Hi Greenberg :)
[9:57] Lydia Milner: i'm rahter behind lol
[9:57] Greenberg Felisimo: Hello Lydia
[9:58] You: so is the emtional connection. These are technologies to save the world, that's why they're important!
[9:58] You: alt least a little piece at a time ;-)
[9:58] TJ Asp: ".. boil the central message down to its essence...."
[9:58] TJ Asp: (from the pdf)
[9:59] You: always helps

[10:01] Lydia Milner: the work i have done so far in SL is along the back wall of the hall
[10:02] Lydia Milner: generally i work on flip chart lol, then post it up and build it eventuallly
[10:02] You: knk's birthday was just a few days ago -- happy birthday knk!

[10:03] Greenberg Felisimo: I never quite thought about a birthday in SL. LOL
[10:04] Alisa Cleanslate: Does anyone do SL horoscopes? lol
[10:04] You: oops, knk crashed I guess
[10:06] Alisa Cleanslate: Greenberg, TJ what are you working on?

[10:07] You: bye, Dancers
[10:07] Greenberg Felisimo: Actually nothing, really I came here to learn about scripting and building, I TPed from SciLands., if anyonehas heard of it.
[10:07] TJ Asp: I was thinking of Blue Energy but stephe tells me that's been removed from the competition.
[10:07] Greenberg Felisimo: I initially came to use the Sandbox.
[10:07] Lydia Milner: Ah yes I like scilands
[10:08] You: yes, I'm on the Scilands senate
[10:08] Lydia Milner: did you find the sandbox here?
[10:08] Greenberg Felisimo: Love SciLands, I am a scientist myself and quite enjoy it.
[10:08] TJ Asp: Will you be going back for the Science Friday show today, Greenberg?
[10:08] Greenberg Felisimo: Yes, the sandbox dome.
[10:08] Lydia Milner: good ok
[10:08] You: you too? what field?

[10:12] Lydia Milner: oh we have what the bleep
[10:12] Greenberg Felisimo: Well depends on your definition of good I suppose. Very intriguing stuff, discusses the limits of ones conciousness affects the world in a physical way.
[10:12] Lydia Milner: are you talking aobut hte same movie?
[10:12] Alisa Cleanslate: Oh I like that...
[10:12] Greenberg Felisimo: Yes, that is it.

[10:14] You: uplifting is good ;-)
[10:14] Greenberg Felisimo: I remember being absolutely moved by it and convinced to be more open minded and forward thinking.
