[8:53]  Nattyboozer Halcali: greetings orange
[8:54]  Orange Montagne: hi Natty Hello Cogito and Stephe
[8:54]  Cogito Ultsch: technology like GPS?
[8:54]  You: well, hte exhibit is to showcase only certain technologies, about a dozen, that won what are called Tech Awards
[8:55]  Cogito Ultsch: is the list on the notecard -- didn't see it?
[8:55]  TJ Asp is Offline
[8:56]  You: here's the list: http://thetechvirtual.org/projects/ucantu/technologies/
[8:56]  Cogito Ultsch: got it :)
[8:57]  Cogito Ultsch: are all of these still available or are some taken already?
[8:57]  You: things like an energy-efficient stove that is cheap to build, a foot-operated water pump, a water filter built from local materials, etc.
[8:57]  Cogito Ultsch: liek a solar stove?
[8:58]  You: some are taken, some are not
[8:58]  TJ Asp is Online
[8:58]  Nattyboozer Halcali: are them the things we can choose from
[8:58]  Nattyboozer Halcali: or can we do our own thing?
[8:59]  You: you can ask to join an existing project, choose one that hasn't been taken, or start your own, new version of one that has been taken already
[8:59]  You: hi, Dancers
[8:59]  Orange Montagne: hi dancers
[8:59]  Dancers Yao: HI
[8:59]  Cogito Ultsch: hi :)
[8:59]  Cogito Ultsch: so - the things listed on the website are "declared projects"?
[9:00]  Orange Montagne: If a project is taken are participants not allowed to start their own new approach for an exhibit?
[9:00]  You: you can do your own thing, but it has to be an exhibit that showcases one of those 12 or so technologies
[9:01]  Dancers Yao: stephe...have new computer...working out bugs...is glow better?
[9:03]  You: wow, Dancers Hooray!!!!
[9:03]  Orange Montagne: Is anyone here working on any of these exhibits yet.
[9:03]  You: congratulations!
[9:03]  You: I guess I just used up my daily quota of '!'
[9:03]  Dancers Yao: It's an amazing difference to see things clearly.
[9:04]  Lydia Milner is Online
[9:04]  Dancers Yao: media screen looks good,
[9:04]  Orange Montagne: hi Perry
[9:04]  Cogito Ultsch: hi
[9:04]  Dancers Yao: Hi
[9:04]  Cogito Ultsch: ok - I've got questions ...
[9:04]  You: hi, Perry
[9:04]  Orange Montagne: hi Lydia
[9:04]  Cogito Ultsch: 1. are the projects listed the ones we are supposed to participate in or are those off limits?
[9:05]  Lydia Milner: Hi all brb
[9:05]  Perry Later: Hi people...
[9:05]  You: hi, Lydia
[9:05]  Dancers Yao: Hi Lydia
[9:05]  Nattyboozer Halcali: hi lydia
[9:05]  Cogito Ultsch: 2. are we bound only by the "large" areas (like education)?
[9:05]  Cogito Ultsch: hi Lydia :)
[9:07]  Orange Montagne: So, are any of you currently working on an exhibit yet?
[9:07]  You: Cogito, the exhibit projects folks have started are here: http://thetechvirtual.org/projects/ucantu-projects
[9:07]  Dancers Yao: yes
[9:07]  Cogito Ultsch: ty Stephe :)
[9:07]  You: and you can ask to join one of those if you like (as long as it's not on the Teen Grid)
[9:08]  Orange Montagne: which one Dancers? if that's public info.
[9:08]  You: or you can click the link at the bottom 'Create your own Project'
[9:08]  Perry Later: Hey Stephe...the other day you mentioned a couple of image files that could be uploaded..jpg was one, what was the other?
[9:09]  Dancers Yao: Create a Universal Language...it's starting to be built
[9:09]  Orange Montagne: ok good, ty.
[9:09]  Dancers Yao: Based on the Witness organization
[9:10]  You: images are pretty flexible: jpeg, bmp, png, but targe sems to be preferable
[9:10]  You: targa
[9:10]  Perry Later: I've got my PhotoShop open and I'm looking at the types but I don't see targ
[9:10]  Dancers Yao: it's about ways of understanding human rights and to help prevent abuse
[9:10]  You: save as .tga
[9:11]  Perry Later: there it iss...I have it!
[9:11]  Orange Montagne: In SL, it's advised .tga for best performance
[9:11]  Cogito Ultsch: Dancers - looking at your project - very noble idea - I like it :)
[9:11]  Dancers Yao: thanks...
[9:11]  Perry Later: is there a preference for an image size in either pixels per inch or kilobytes?
[9:12]  Lydia Milner: sorry, bback briefly
[9:12]  Lydia Milner: oh hey natty, good seeing you again :)
[9:12]  Orange Montagne: Just wondering, how many teams formed so far?
[9:12]  Cogito Ultsch: ... looks like 18 topics or so
[9:12]  You: Cogito Q#2: when you create a project, you're asked to specify a 'topic' - i.e. which of the dozen award-winning technologies your exhibit will highlight
[9:13]  Cogito Ultsch: ah - ty :)
[9:13]  You: so Dancer's exhibit is about the Witness project, for ex.
[9:14]  Orange Montagne: Anyone else besides Dancers on a team yet, or started a project yet?
[9:14]  Cogito Ultsch: not me
[9:14]  Lydia Milner: yes me but cooking right now :)
[9:15]  You: Lydia is working on 5 exhibits - she's a pro
[9:15]  Cogito Ultsch: wow!
[9:15]  Orange Montagne: Oh my!
[9:15]  Lydia Milner: mad i tell you mad mad!
[9:15]  You: she has one exhibit that won last time around and is now sitting in the RL museum
[9:15]  Cogito Ultsch: well - I wonder whether you get sleep ever :)
[9:15]  Cogito Ultsch: congrats!
[9:16]  Lydia Milner: 1 outsntading assignment, 3 tax returns, one child with chick pox heehee, sleep huh?
[9:16]  Perry Later: I've got another project to jump to....I'll catch up with you all later...bye for a bit.
[9:16]  You: bye perry!
[9:16]  Dancers Yao: bye
[9:16]  Cogito Ultsch: bye
[9:16]  Lydia Milner: bye
[9:17]  You: chicken pox, that doesn't sound good. Poor Amanda
[9:17]  Orange Montagne: bye natt
[9:17]  You: bye, Natty
[9:17]  Lydia Milner: lolo amelia, hasnt dampended her engegy though :)
[9:18]  Orange Montagne: How about you, Cogito, are any from the list interesting to you as projects to work on?
[9:18]  Cogito Ultsch: all of the topics look more than worthy to me - I'm interested in something that bridges topics - like environment (energy) & education
[9:19]  You: hi, Tommy, come join us
[9:19]  TommyJW Ninetails: ty..
[9:19]  Cogito Ultsch: hi Tom
[9:19]  You: we're talking about building exhibits
[9:19]  TommyJW Ninetails: I see you have many here
[9:19]  Orange Montagne: Lydia are you doing anything on "Fogquest"
[9:20]  TommyJW Ninetails accepted your inventory offer.
[9:20]  You: hi, Whig, come join us
[9:20]  Lydia Milner: yes its over hte back
[9:20]  Lydia Milner: have you looked at the webpage?
[9:20]  Whlg Xue: thz i will
[9:21]  Cogito Ultsch: Hi Whlg
[9:21]  Lydia Milner: sorry that was to orange, have you looked at the webpage?
[9:21]  Orange Montagne: I saw the topics, but havent seen info on current teams
[9:21]  Whlg Xue accepted your inventory offer.
[9:21]  Whlg Xue: hi all
[9:21]  Orange Montagne: hi whig
[9:21]  TommyJW Ninetails accepted your inventory offer.
[9:21]  Lydia Milner: Hi Whlg
[9:21]  Whlg Xue accepted your inventory offer.
[9:21]  TJ Asp is Offline
[9:22]  Dancers Yao: HI whig
[9:22]  Lydia Milner: http://thetechvirtual.org/projects/ucantu-projects/
[9:22]  Orange Montagne: hi Whig, nice to meet you, are you on a team or started a project yet?
[9:22]  Lydia Milner: thislists the projs that ppl are currently working on
[9:22]  Lydia Milner: I have 6 listed, 3 poss 4 are off hte list now so that leaves me 3-4 to work on
[9:23]  Lydia Milner: onil, fogquest, kickstart and barefoot college
[9:23]  You: if you click on an exhibit project, at the bottom you'll see a list of the team members
[9:24]  Whlg Xue: I didnt start anything but I have some projects in Autodesk Maya is there anyway 2 trasfer them into second life?
[9:24]  You: it's not straightforward
[9:24]  Orange Montagne: not really
[9:25]  You: there are ways to go from Maya or Blender to sculpties
[9:25]  Whlg Xue: with those color pictures that represent 3D models
[9:25]  Orange Montagne: Whig, the list of current topics is here http://thetechvirtual.org/projects/ucantu/technologies/
[9:25]  Whlg Xue: ooops sorry
[9:26]  You: but the design principle in SL is low prim number, while traditional cad programs may have very hig vertex counts
[9:26]  Orange Montagne: Dancers is working on onil, fogquest, kickstart and barefoot college
[9:26]  Orange Montagne: Sorry Lydia is working on onil, fogquest, kickstart and barefoot college
[9:27]  Cogito Ultsch: are these projects about making better use of existing technologies?
[9:27]  Orange Montagne: Dancers is on Create a Universal Language
[9:27]  Dancers Yao: Stephe...how do you set the permissions on the objects
[9:28]  Lydia Milner: the proejcts are all based on tech award winners, who have created products which benefit humanity
[9:28]  Cogito Ultsch: ok - need to look at website some more
[9:28]  You: for each object, texture, script etc. right click and choose properties
[9:28]  You: then check everything in sight ;-)
[9:29]  Dancers Yao: eg Witness uses camera and the internet to document human rights abuses
[9:29]  Dancers Yao: is that full perm
[9:29]  Lydia Milner: cogito the poss project topics are listed here
[9:29]  Lydia Milner: http://thetechvirtual.org/projects/ucantu/technologies/
[9:29]  You: the bigger story is that in December the Tech will open a new gallery called UcanTu about those award-winning technologies
[9:30]  You: the goal is to see you exhibit be part of that gallery
[9:31]  You: most importnat criterion is to make your exhibit inspire visitors to help make the world a better place: "You Can Too"
[9:31]  You: exhibits should also be educational
[9:32]  TommyJW Ninetails: s there anything along using SL .. say for saving energy in communting to work or meeting, or school?
[9:32]  You: how does technology work, what problem does it solve, how does it solve it, why should I care, etc.
[9:32]  Cogito Ultsch: ok - so, the "kickstart pump" looks like it is available technology - so now I need to find out whether anyone is doing anything with it, right?
[9:32]  Lydia Milner: UcanTu DESIGN CRITERIA For starters, read this page: Then observe the following guidelines: 1. The exhibit should highlight one or more of the Tech Award-winning technologies listed here, in a way that makes them meaningful and accessible. 2. The exhibit should be inspiring. It should make visitors realize that the tools to make a better world are not out of reach, but all around us. It should make them want to get involved in their own communities and in the world ("You can, too!"). 3. The exhibit must be interactive, and it should not rely on docent explanations or a lot of documentation for visitors to understand it. 4. It should be educational. It should convey an understanding of a) how the featured technology actually works, b) what global problem it addresses, and c) how it provides a solution. 5. If there is a connection that can be made with Silicon Valley (companies, local uses for the technology, individuals involved, etc.), that is a plus.
[9:32]  Whlg Xue: i theres no problem ill try to do it in maya mayby trasfer 2 blender and than in SL Is radio ok
[9:32]  Whlg Xue: ?
[9:32]  Orange Montagne: I see that exhibits have to be feasible in RL and not just information booths, what other qualities are the judges looking for?
[9:32]  Lydia Milner: 6. It must be feasible to build the exhibit in real life. 7. The exhibit concept must be licensed under Creative Commons (you agreed to this when you joined the Website) and the virtual exhibit should be full-perm. 8. If you feel a need to contact one of the Tech Award laureates, talk to Stephe or Shakini first. We may already have what you need.
[9:33]  Bjorlyn Loon is Offline
[9:33]  You: sure. There is a group in TG that started radion, and another project here, but neither has gotten very far.
[9:34]  You: you can join the one in MG or start a their, no pb
[9:34]  Cogito Ultsch: the "kickstart pump" doesn't look like anyone is creating an exhibit yet - so that would be a new topic to enter, right?
[9:34]  Whlg Xue: ok
[9:34]  Lydia Milner: i am doing a projec ton kickstart and there is one on the teen grid
[9:34]  You: lydia is working on Kickstart
[9:35]  Lydia Milner: you can join my project if you want, but it is almost finished
[9:35]  Cogito Ultsch: I'm sorry - guess I'm really not doing this right
[9:35]  Lydia Milner: lol
[9:35]  Lydia Milner: there's a lot ot read :)
[9:35]  Cogito Ultsch: no - sorry
[9:35]  Lydia Milner: let me send you antoehr link
[9:35]  You: but you could ask her to let you join her;-)
[9:35]  Lydia Milner: http://thetechvirtual.org/projects/ucantu-projects/
[9:35]  Lydia Milner: [9:35] You: you can join my project if you want, but it is almost finished :)
[9:36]  Cogito Ultsch: no, ty :)
[9:36]  Cogito Ultsch: I tried to find something not worked on yet - and clearly did not pay attention to the chat list
[9:36]  Lydia Milner: lold oy ou want ot bounce some ideas around and see if anything new takes your fancy?
[9:37]  Lydia Milner: yes, its impossible to read the webpage and chat at same time :)
[9:37]  Lydia Milner: i dont think eleectric free refidgeration is being worked on
[9:37]  Orange Montagne: Sorry, I"m still not clear if new people can start a new project if there are already projects under that topic.
[9:37]  Lydia Milner: s/be quite easy to build something in SL
[9:38]  Lydia Milner: I think thats why it says discuss with Stephe or Shakini before starting, to check youre not wasting your time replicating an idea for excmaple
[9:38]  Orange Montagne: that's always a good thing!
[9:38]  Cogito Ultsch: non-electric refridgeration sounds ok
[9:38]  Lydia Milner: but anew idea on same topic is welcome
[9:39]  Lydia Milner: i dont think anyone id dfoing funacion terram
[9:39]  Cogito Ultsch: sorry?
[9:39]  Dancers Yao: For explaining to other team members, what exactly is full perm? Does it mean anyone can copy? With all the boxes checked as Stephe said
[9:39]  Lydia Milner: I do feel the personal need ot do a spreadsheet of all the projects, lol, I can t keep track
[9:39]  Orange Montagne: ok thanks that's clear now.
[9:39]  You: topics that no one has taken so far include: the More-Sand filter, ONIL cookstove, CellBazaar, Electric-Free refrigeration, Fundacion terram, and Jaipur Foot
[9:39]  Lydia Milner: yes, full perm means that the next owner can do what they want with it, sell it, copy it etc
[9:39]  Lydia Milner: I am doing onil, dont know about garvie and jaipur?
[9:40]  Orange Montagne also likes spreadsheets
[9:40]  Cogito Ultsch: ty :)
[9:40]  Lydia Milner: lol
[9:40]  Dancers Yao: what does onil mean
[9:40]  You: oh, sorry Lydia
[9:40]  Orange Montagne: hehe
[9:41]  Lydia Milner: cogito you are more than welcome to join any of mine if you want
[9:41]  You: It was invented by a guy named O'Neill, but I think ONIL may be an acronym of some sort
[9:41]  Cogito Ultsch: ty Lydia - I'm not sure I am "designer material" really - not sure I could contribute - right now, I sadly feel that I'm not
[9:42]  Dancers Yao: feedback is always helpful
[9:42]  You: Cogito there are lots of ppl that know building and scripting and are willing to help
[9:43]  You: Good ideas are what are in greatest demand
[9:43]  Orange Montagne: Also Cogito if you join a team that wins you can share prize, as I understand.
[9:43]  Dancers Yao: I thought with full perm you stil had credit for the design, ideas, etc
[9:43]  Lydia Milner is Offline
[9:43]  Whlg Xue: bye
[9:43]  Orange Montagne: we lost Lydia
[9:43]  You: yes, you do. That is the Creative Commons Attribution licence
[9:44]  Cogito Ultsch: all of u are way 2 nice - ty - but I am such a beginner that I'd just slow ppl down ... would not be able to really contribute ... I should probably first spend time in classes to learn about scripting and such and then join next year/next round
[9:44]  Lydia Milner is Online
[9:44]  Cogito Ultsch: stephe - u send the list of classes via the group, right?
[9:44]  You: there will be lots more rounds - anothe beginning in August, probably
[9:45]  Dancers Yao: okay...Alisa wondered how to transfer that to the objects...that's where I got confused
[9:45]  Orange Montagne: Lots of ways to participate Cogito, I'm sure a team would welcome your contribution, not everyone builds or scripts.
[9:45]  Cogito Ultsch: thanks all - I'll be back for the next round, hopefully better prepared to contribute
[9:45]  You: yes, and they're listed on the calendar on the Website, and on the notecard Info on the Tech
[9:45]  Cogito Ultsch: I'll be studying awhile :)
[9:46]  Orange Montagne: It seems there would be need for research, sourcing, writing, things like that too.
[9:46]  Lydia Milner: cogito, as 9.41 you said not designer, to be honest i think everyone thinks that when they first walk into this hall,b ut no-one is until the do it, then they are :)
[9:46]  Dancers Yao: yes Cognito that's true
[9:46]  Orange Montagne: Winning team is eligible for up to 250K linden per team member up to 4 members.
[9:46]  You: it's learning to swim by getting thrown in the pool ;-)
[9:46]  Lydia Milner: crashed, can someone please paste me the text 9.41 - 944
[9:47]  Cogito Ultsch: have a great time planning - this is more than a great program and purpose you've got here - to be honest, it's the first "real" purpose I've seen in SL
[9:47]  Cogito Ultsch: bye :)
[9:47]  T3ch Janus is Online
[9:47]  Lydia Milner: hah stephe that true lol, but in a nice way :)
[9:47]  You: [9:41] Lydia Milner: cogito you are more than welcome to join any of mine if you want [9:41] You: It was invented by a guy named O'Neill, but I think ONIL may be an acronym of some sort [9:41] Cogito Ultsch: ty Lydia - I'm not sure I am "designer material" really - not sure I could contribute - right now, I sadly feel that I'm not [9:42] Dancers Yao: feedback is always helpful [9:42] You: Cogito there are lots of ppl that know building and scripting and are willing to help [9:43] You: Good ideas are what are in greatest demand [9:43] Orange Montagne: Also Cogito if you join a team that wins you can share prize, as I understand. [9:47]  Lydia Milner: thanks
[9:47]  Dancers Yao: bye
[9:47]  Orange Montagne: he'll be back
[9:48]  Lydia Milner: oh shame
[9:48]  Moya Janus is Online
[9:48]  Orange Montagne: I was going to see if he had some other interest or skill there.
[9:49]  Lydia Milner: Stephe, did you say something aobut another something in august?
[9:49]  Lydia Milner: dancers what is your query with full perm?
[9:49]  Lydia Milner: oh you have you new computer now yes?
[9:50]  You: yes, the Art, Film and Music exhibition has a new curator, and he'll be starting the competition up again, probably next month
[9:50]  Dancers Yao: was trying to find how to give credit to objects, videos, etc and where to put it in the exhibit
[9:50]  Lydia Milner: oh good, that was very popular, easy for ppl to relate too
[9:50]  You: and we will be starting other competitions soon after that
[9:51]  Orange Montagne: Will Art, Film, Music also be open to this type of exhibit creation?
[9:51]  Lydia Milner: with AFM we did notecards that you clikced to get, and in that listed all those details,a nd can go onthe webpage too
[9:51]  Dancers Yao: Un Can Tu still has until August 4?
[9:51]  Lydia Milner: most of hte exhbs still in this hall are AFM

[10:45]  You: Dancers is the only one I know who is as slow a typer as I am ;-)

[10:54]  T3ch Janus is Offline
[10:54]  Dancers Yao: this is about the media tech and interaction with people, telling stories, like around a global campfire so it needs that combination of tech and humanity

[10:56]  You: sorry folks I have to run off for another meeting
