[9:02]  Alisa Cleanslate: Yes, thanks so much. It made me wonder if we could use the post card somehow..
[9:03]  Lydia Milner is Online
[9:03]  You: the UcanTu competition officially runs until Aug. 4
[9:03]  Agent Sorbet: is anyone brand new to the tech virtual today?
[9:03]  Garvie Garzo: just leaving something lying around with info is good
[9:03]  Garvie Garzo: maybe a link to the projects page could be added
[9:03]  Agent Sorbet: Aug. 4 great
[9:03]  LS4 Xue: me
[9:03]  Garvie Garzo: that would keep it more current
[9:03]  Lydia Milner: hi all :)
[9:03]  Lydia Milner: hey garvie :)
[9:04]  Garvie Garzo: hi lydia
[9:04]  You: and judging won't take place until Aug. 7, just between us and the 4 walls ;-)

[9:04]  Agent Sorbet: Here's the main page LS4: http://thetechvirtual.org/
[9:04]  Alisa Cleanslate: Hi Lydia
[9:04]  Dancers Yao: okay..
[9:04]  Agent Sorbet: A few people have joined and started projects here.
[9:05]  You: great water bottles, Lydia ;-)
[9:05]  Lydia Milner: lol for shakini's benefit
[9:05]  Lydia Milner: reember we were talking about it
[9:05]  Agent Sorbet: it's effective
[9:05]  Alisa Cleanslate: I have to reorient the fog.
[9:05]  Lydia Milner: your exhb is looking good dancers
[9:06]  Lydia Milner: oh yes
[9:06]  Lydia Milner: i tihnk it will stay here now
[9:06]  peter Woody: true
[9:06]  You: We have two big announcements:
[9:06]  Dancers Yao: thanks to alisa and Kasuku
[9:06]  Dancers Yao: Alisa did the video....and to Stephe....
[9:07]  You: Agent Sorbet will start fulltime MOnday as the Tech's Virtual Community Manager
[9:07]  You: so that means we'll be two hanging around here
[9:07]  Lydia Milner: good
[9:07]  Dancers Yao: wonderful..congratulations
[9:07]  Agent Sorbet: Looking forward to it! ty
[9:08]  You: and Lydia, who has been doing just about everying around here, will quit as volunteer manager and go back to being a funn-time master exhibit builder
[9:09]  You: ** full-time
[9:09]  Lydia Milner: lol
[9:09]  You: funn time too, I hope
[9:09]  Garvie Garzo: woot
[9:09]  Lydia Milner: funn time sounds better :)
[9:09]  peter Woody: haha
[9:09]  Alisa Cleanslate: Fantastic
[9:09]  Agent Sorbet: oh I hope you will still be around!
[9:10]  Lydia Milner: IT HAS been great fun volunteering here, I wish I had had time to do more - like straighten the floor lol and write course manuals - but Agent will do a grand job I am sure :)
[9:10]  Agent Sorbet: I'm looking forward to meeting everybody over the first couple weeks as Ucantu wraps up.
[9:11]  Agent Sorbet: Please send me your input as you have been working on these exhibits for some time!
[9:11]  LS4 Xue accepted your inventory offer.
[9:11]  Dancers Yao: where to send
[9:11]  LS4 Xue accepted your inventory offer.
[9:12]  Agent Sorbet: by IM is good
[9:12]  Dancers Yao: okay thx
[9:12]  Agent Sorbet: I'll be busy getting up to speed on the state of Ucantu and the progress all around.
[9:12]  Agent Sorbet: Havent had time yet to see each project individually.
[9:13]  You: starting Mon I think rketner@thetech.org should do it, too
[9:13]  Agent Sorbet: will add to my profile
[9:14]  Qion Ning is Offline
[9:14]  You: there's a lot of furious activity going on in the Teen Grid, too
[9:14]  You: and a lot of copying ;-)
[9:14]  Qion Ning is Online
[9:14]  You: there are 3 Solar Sailors
[9:14]  You: 3 (more) Fog Quests
[9:14]  You: etc.
[9:15]  Garvie Garzo: are they copying each other, or just all riffing on the ame ideas?
[9:15]  Agent Sorbet: Is that ok, if they approach the topic differently?
[9:15]  peter Woody: copying is sometimes a way to learning
[9:15]  Garvie Garzo: yes, especially when you're new to something, copying what you admire gets you started
[9:16]  Lydia Milner: so many great artists.....
[9:16]  You: well, probably at most only one might get selected for the exhibition, between the 2 grids
[9:17]  Qion Ning is Offline
[9:17]  Garvie Garzo: you mean oner total, or one fogquest
[9:17]  You: so It's not a great strategy, but they won't listen. Monkey see, monkey do
[9:17]  Agent Sorbet: Is it likely more will be unshrouded between now and Aug. 4 ?
[9:17]  Lydia Milner: you could sudden death all the solar sailors, first one round the lighthouse and back wins :)
[9:18]  You: one per topic, max
[9:18]  Garvie Garzo: lol
[9:18]  You: so yes, one FogQuest, or one Solar Sailor
[9:18]  Garvie Garzo: i considered that one just cuz tyhe name is sooo evocative
[9:18]  You: and, of course, there is no promise of even that
[9:19]  Agent Sorbet: Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't the judging on the concept of the exhibit more than the model itself?
[9:19]  You: good morning Dave, come join us!
[9:19]  Garvie Garzo: yes, i love your socks lol
[9:19]  Agent Sorbet: So, there could be multiple approaches to FogQuest for example.
[9:19]  Lydia Milner: different curators seem to approach that question different;y
[9:20]  You: yes that's right Agent
[9:21]  You: there could be, but the odds are probably thin
[9:21]  Agent Sorbet: Ok, I see. Will have to examine each to see what's been built.
[9:21]  Qion Ning is Online
[9:22]  Lydia Milner: with the amount of time visitors spend at each exhb you generally have to distill the message, so unless you are going to take a rather esoteric approach that tends to narrow down the options for what to express Agent
[9:22]  Agent Sorbet: Please join Tommy
[9:22]  TommyJW Ninetails: TY
[9:22]  Agent Sorbet: I see what you mean.
[9:23]  Garvie Garzo: yeah, but i'd say that the more you distill the more variety you'd end up with..
[9:23]  Garvie Garzo: conversely the more literal interpretations would tend to produce greater overlapping
[9:23]  peter Woody nods
[9:24]  Dancers Yao: I've wanted to have more interactive story telling possibilities, like with Witness and the blogs on the internet...that's harder in SL, but important for the issues of human rights.
[9:24]  You: Hi, tommy
[9:24]  Agent Sorbet: Right, Lydia's plastic water bottle person is a unique way to get the concept across.
[9:25]  Garvie Garzo: yes, i love that.. very immediate, very visceral :)
[9:25]  Agent Sorbet: It's a way to go beyond just modeling the RL invention.
[9:26]  Lydia Milner: thanks, he's rather skinny due to prim count, wouldve liked him to have at least 2 layers :)
[9:26]  TommyJW Ninetails accepted your inventory offer.
[9:26]  Lydia Milner: sadly he's a one layer kinda guy
[9:26]  TommyJW Ninetails accepted your inventory offer.
[9:26]  You: Tommy there's some info on what's going on here
[9:27]  Agent Sorbet: Oh my I don't like being limited by prims.
[9:27]  TommyJW Ninetails: thanks.. I'll look at this
[9:27]  Lydia Milner: good point Agent. (Don't tell Stephe, but so far prim count hasn't been a criteria in exhibit building :))
[9:28]  TommyJW Ninetails accepted your inventory offer.
[9:28]  Garvie Garzo: woot again
[9:28]  Lydia Milner: its much more fun that way, like not having a budget lol
[9:28]  You: lol
[9:28]  Dancers Yao: Stephe....any word on Mandela video
[9:28]  Garvie Garzo: still, last time the lag git nearly unbearable
[9:28]  Garvie Garzo: actually BUILDING in here can be a bitch
[9:28]  Lydia Milner: yeah, i thik that may've been alot scripting not just hte prims
[9:29]  Lydia Milner: you get ooodles of scripts in here
[9:29]  Garvie Garzo: yes, more likely or very heavy pixel count textures
[9:29]  Agent Sorbet: Garvie I tend to agree, how about using the sandbox?
[9:29]  You: we did some housecleaning to reduce the overall prim coulnt
[9:29]  Garvie Garzo: well, i actually build at my place, but here someyimes reassembly is required etc
[9:30]  Garvie Garzo: and i finally have the ability to do a holodeck rezzer for the older exhibits
[9:30]  Garvie Garzo: let's finish this one and then REEEALLY houseclean like we planned
[9:30]  You: we're all on one requion, so there's no escaping the overall prim limit w/out going off the island
[9:30]  Garvie Garzo: that's true
[9:30]  You: great, Garive
[9:31]  You: Garvie
[9:31]  Garvie Garzo: i just noticed with SHOCK and awe that i omnly have 1000 left at home
[9:31]  Dancers Yao: is it more difficult to bring in video and/or streaming from a web site in SL?
[9:32]  Garvie Garzo: no, it's easier than it was
[9:32]  Agent Sorbet: I see 1000 left on one of the parcels here but I expect that there are a lot that could be removed.
[9:33]  You: Sorry, dnacers, no word yet from the Elders about the Mandela video
[9:34]  Dancers Yao: because the Witness org is about telling stories and interacting with media, I have wanted that to be the kind of tech that is featured, but it has been difficult to know what is possible.
[9:34]  Alisa Cleanslate: Stephe, could we make a lighter version of the texture for the video, we want the screen to blend in with the galaxy look.
[9:35]  Garvie Garzo: i was working on a witness one that was to have nothing but videos and stills arranged on a structure similar tio that tree thing design for the actual tech
[9:35]  Alisa Cleanslate: Meaning grey and blue. The black is too dark.
[9:35]  Agent Sorbet: You may want to place still images where your video will play on the model to get an idea.
[9:35]  Garvie Garzo: you just need embedded links in the prims that will show the videos
[9:35]  You: sure, Alisa, give me a texture you like and I'll change it
[9:36]  Alisa Cleanslate: Great thanks. the one you used is fine, but maybe make the black gray for white.
[9:36]  Alisa Cleanslate: or white.*
[9:36]  Lydia Milner: in the screen in kickstart i have the url so you clikc and open in your browser. Woudl that be an option for you?
[9:37]  Dancers Yao: Stephe...do I need to also ask Shakini about this...but can I also request the video for my real life work, for Elder Voices, my non-profit org, as I want to use it there also....this would then be two different requests...but if they answer, I could as about using it here.
[9:37]  You: yes, If you have a relation with them ask directly
[9:38]  You: they can't get too many requests ;-)
[9:39]  You: Lydia, I tried the link but the in-world browser doesn't sem to know how to handle the Flash.
[9:39]  You: I get sound but no video
[9:39]  Lydia Milner: oh i always open things in my regular browser
[9:39]  Dancers Yao: okay...wasn't sure, so waited. But my request would be for longer term use....as education about human rights in general.
[9:40]  Garvie Garzo: what about using something like tube2sl to paly video?
[9:40]  Garvie Garzo: i think you don't need to be region owner anymore
[9:40]  You: tube2SL?
[9:40]  Agent Sorbet: Yes there are some new things available just over last couple weeks.
[9:41]  Garvie Garzo: yeah, it's a video playing script, what they usually use for watch the video of philip lindens speech etc
[9:41]  Garvie Garzo: you house the video on your website somewhere, then use this to play it inworld
[9:41]  Garvie Garzo: also good for sl tvs
[9:42]  Lydia Milner: http://www.secondlifeinsider.com/2007/09/11/tube2sl-makes-virtual-screening-a-reality/
[9:42]  Garvie Garzo: cool
[9:42]  peter Woody: ty
[9:42]  You: cool, have to try it
[9:43]  Garvie Garzo: dunno, doesn't sound good
[9:43]  Lydia Milner: http://www.tube2sl.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=6
[9:43]  Garvie Garzo: odd, but i thought that i had it for free
[9:43]  Garvie Garzo: hmmm
[9:43]  Garvie Garzo: it's another damn group that i'm in anyway
[9:44]  Garvie Garzo: i guess maybe just do what it does on your own site
[9:44]  Dancers Yao: what about interaction on line with someone from the exhibit.....so people could share a story from SL to on line with the internet?
[9:44]  Agent Sorbet: I thought i heard Stephe say that it might be possible to set media anyway, but I'm not sure.
[9:45]  Garvie Garzo: you should be able to do that by just linking tio a wiki
[9:45]  You: yes, we can set you up with your own parcel, and then you can set the media that way
[9:45]  Garvie Garzo: in regards to interaction that was
[9:46]  Agent Sorbet: That's best, and no cost except setting up the parcel.
[9:47]  Dancers Yao: Garvie great...in case there weren't other people at the exhibit, it would allow people to interact with others about their stoires about human rights.
[9:48]  Garvie Garzo: yeah, you could do it almost like a guest book, leave a comment or story type thing, but via a url to a wiki
[9:49]  Dancers Yao: but not in real time....so you can't broadcast out, but can stream in?
[9:49]  Agent Sorbet: That would be interesting if there's someone on the other side.
[9:50]  Garvie Garzo: well, we can go out there in real time, but 'interaction' doesn't exactly describe the web
[9:50]  Dancers Yao: yes...I wanted a real time global campfire story telling experience...about human rights.
[9:50]  Garvie Garzo: you and i might all be on the same page.. but we don't know the other is there
[9:50]  Agent Sorbet: Hi Qion
[9:50]  Lydia Milner: Hi Qion :)
[9:50]  You: hi, qion
[9:50]  Qion Ning: hi..
[9:51]  Qion Ning: long time no see..
[9:51]  peter Woody: hi ù
[9:51]  Dancers Yao: hi qion
[9:51]  Lydia Milner: yes, how you doing?
[9:51]  Qion Ning: sorry for stepping on the table
[9:51]  You: Qion the UcanTu deadline is not Aug. 4 - a little more time
[9:51]  Qion Ning: hi lydia and stephe and the rest.. i'm fine..
[9:51]  Qion Ning: just a bit busy in rl
[9:51]  Lydia Milner: good :)
[9:52]  You: how's you Freeplay Radio project?
[9:52]  Agent Sorbet: Dancers it's good. Maybe some can contribute text, some photos, some video according to what they are able to produce to contribute.
[9:52]  Qion Ning: i've got a problem with it..
[9:52]  You: can we help?
[9:52]  Qion Ning: they just deleted my free email account..
[9:53]  Garvie Garzo: they?
[9:53]  You: bummer
[9:53]  Qion Ning: micht need the pictures resend to another mail adrers
[9:53]  You: HI, Louren. come join us!
[9:53]  Dancers Yao: yes Agent....this is like the Hub on Witness, I want to emphasis this....as if the virtual discussions we have here...could be expanded.
[9:54]  Louren Fiertze: hi stephe
[9:54]  You: Qion, let me give you the textures after the meeting - no email needed
[9:54]  Qion Ning: great thnx..
[9:54]  Louren Fiertze: it sounds interesting.. may i join here?
[9:54]  You: please do
[9:54]  Garvie Garzo: oh god, yes please join
[9:55]  Louren Fiertze: thanks
[9:55]  Garvie Garzo: just click a chair
[9:55]  Agent Sorbet: It's definitely a compelling idea for the campfire style interaction - with less smoke than a campfire!
[9:55]  Lydia Milner: just right click a chair to sit
[9:55]  Agent Sorbet: Hi Louren
[9:55]  peter Woody: welcome Louren
[9:56]  Louren Fiertze: hi agent, peter
[9:56]  Louren Fiertze accepted your inventory offer.
[9:56]  Louren Fiertze accepted your inventory offer.
[9:56]  Louren Fiertze accepted your inventory offer.
[9:56]  Dancers Yao: Yes! And allows the museum to be more out and inworld at the same time! Not restricted...
[9:57]  peter Woody: can we calculate in some way the probability of an effective interaction?
[9:57]  Agent Sorbet: I'd like to ask if anyone thinks they would be interested to try voice during the in world meetings.
[9:58]  You: the reason we haven't used voice is that it's nice to keep a chat log of the meetings
[9:58]  Dancers Yao: I would....don't type fast....left handed! But what about transcripts...they really help.
[9:58]  peter Woody: I would have understanding problems...
[9:58]  Agent Sorbet: Or is that exclusively for the classes.
[9:58]  Lydia Milner: i dont want to use voice, noisy here
[9:58]  Dancers Yao: yes would miss chat log.
[9:58]  Lydia Milner: chat log is very useful
[9:59]  You: yes, there's the language issue, too
[9:59]  Dancers Yao: it can be...I'll type....
[9:59]  You: how's Amelia's chx pox?
[9:59]  Agent Sorbet: Ok great, got it. I'm not a huge fan of voice either.
[9:59]  Agent Sorbet: Thanks for letting me know!
[9:59]  Lydia Milner: true, i had a deaf lady n my class a couple weeks ago,s he asked at the beginning for text chat of she could not join in
[9:59]  Garvie Garzo: i'll try voice, but it's far less efective
[10:00]  Qion Ning is Offline
[10:00]  Garvie Garzo: it's more like a rl meeting where a whole hour gets used to convety 12 mins of info
[10:00]  Lydia Milner: lol, 12 is goooood
[10:00]  Garvie Garzo: i don't mind listening tho
[10:00]  peter Woody: lol
[10:00]  Agent Sorbet: Right Garvie we are leaving RL meetings back in history!
[10:01]  Alisa Cleanslate: Dancers, Katsuko and I have been using voice to work on the exhibit. Works pretty well, except for occasional screetching sounds.
[10:01]  Dancers Yao: yes...for the exhibit it's helpful.
[10:02]  TommyJW Ninetails: the voice is a great way to have someone presenting inforation and others asking through chat..
[10:02]  Agent Sorbet: Good, and it seemed ok in the classes.
[10:02]  Garvie Garzo: btw, any recommendations on what sort of microphone to get?
[10:02]  TommyJW Ninetails: The usb's seem to have a lot of lag.. generally
[10:03]  Lydia Milner: dont know, mine is built in
[10:03]  Dancers Yao: I am trying to explore different disability access...so sometimes voice is good, for others typing....
[10:03]  Alisa Cleanslate: I'm using my built in mic. I need headphones to control the feedback.
[10:03]  Garvie Garzo: hmmm
[10:03]  You: I have a plain-vanilla Plantronics headset (not USB) that works pretty well
[10:03]  Lydia Milner: Stephe, at the beg didnt you say 2 pices of news, one= agent, did I miss the other?
[10:03]  Garvie Garzo: i have a headset somewhere and a littl;e cheapo mic, but haven't plugged either of them in
[10:03]  TommyJW Ninetails: if you have a sound card .. then it will be build in .. usually - of course they give you electric shocks..
[10:03]  Lydia Milner: if you leave the mike open and get close together it screeches, if you only switch on when speaking not so bad
[10:03]  Garvie Garzo: yes, you were the other? no
[10:04]  Qion Ning is Online
[10:04]  You: #2 was to say that you are graduating from volunteer coordinator, and to thank you for all the work you've done!
[10:04]  Garvie Garzo: how can a mic be built in?
[10:04]  You: lol
[10:04]  Lydia Milner: oh yes,ok, i already knw that haha. Was tihnknig there was something else i had ot remember.
[10:04]  Lydia Milner: haha oh ot be young again!
[10:04]  Garvie Garzo: i'm sitting here at a desktop, got speakers, no place to speak into
[10:04]  Lydia Milner: dunno its a laptop hass built in mic
[10:04]  Lydia Milner: and webcam
[10:05]  TommyJW Ninetails: the build in mics are usually in laptops.. a condense mic
[10:05]  Agent Sorbet: And news that Ucantu runs through Aug. 4
[10:05]  Garvie Garzo: yes, laptops are very starnge that way
[10:05]  Dancers Yao: mine is built in also
[10:05]  You: that too
[10:05]  TommyJW Ninetails: that is the situation which is most likely to get a shock from SL and mics..
[10:06]  Qion Ning: tiny crash
[10:06]  You: BTW, if anyone's thinking of starting a project here are the topics that no one has built yet:
[10:06]  TommyJW Ninetails: ... lol
[10:06]  You: Cell Bazaar
[10:06]  Garvie Garzo: i dunno i LOVE typed chat.. i think that voice is going to fundamentally fck up what makes sl better than rl
[10:06]  You: More-Sand Filter
[10:07]  You: jaupur foot
[10:07]  You: Fondacion Terrram
[10:07]  Garvie Garzo: THIS is so egalitarian, and people are so much more liely to exchange important info in type, and they absorb what others say differenntly in type, and everything said come with tha author;s name attached
[10:07]  Agent Sorbet: No worries Garvie for meetings we'll be texting it
[10:07]  TommyJW Ninetails: voice has it's place.. but if it's not worth the trouble of typing out - it's not worth saying
[10:07]  You: here's the whole list: http://thetechvirtual.org/projects/ucantu/technologies/
[10:07]  Lydia Milner: lol
[10:08]  Garvie Garzo: we do chat with voice and it's way too much like real life innanity will rule
[10:08]  Moya Janus is Online
[10:08]  TommyJW Ninetails: type is more direct with less distraction from voice . Voice put's a lot of other info out
[10:08]  Agent Sorbet: Since there's a bit of a deadline, anyone have anything they need to know for this last week of Ucantu?
[10:09]  Garvie Garzo: yes, how important is iot to catch up on the web
[10:09]  Alisa Cleanslate: And you can go back and review what's been said. I multi-task a lot, so it's really helpful.
[10:09]  Bjorlyn Loon is Offline
[10:09]  You: interestingly in the RL museum we installed kiosks where visitors can give feedback on the exhibits
[10:09]  Garvie Garzo: i am so behind, that i feel i just have to frab a couple of booths and get the stuff IN jere
[10:09]  Garvie Garzo: worry about the paperwork later
[10:09]  You: what they write is projected on the wall for all to see
[10:10]  You: so the kids use it as a soapbox
[10:10]  Garvie Garzo: i love that
