Open Source Designers meeting 2008-10-07
New regarding a machinima being made by ICOM (International Council of Museums) on Oct. 16 and Seafore Perl and Garvie Garzo start sketch projects on The Tech 2 island.
[10:03] Agent Heliosense: Hi hongjun
[10:03] Hongjun Scarmon: Hi
[10:04] Agent Heliosense: how did you find our museum?
[10:05] Hongjun Scarmon: By search for the education events
[10:05] Agent Heliosense: oh great
[10:06] Agent Heliosense: http://www.thetechvirtual.org is our site
[10:06] Agent Heliosense: and what we do is, we use second life as a collaborative platform for designing museum exhibits
[10:08] You decline Parkside Hall Exhibit Workshop, The Tech (68, 121, 37) from A group member named Agent Heliosense.
[10:09] Hongjun Scarmon: cool
[10:09] Hongjun Scarmon: is there a meeting here?
[10:09] Agent Heliosense: hi Seafore
[10:09] Seafore Perl: Hello, Agent.
[10:10] Seafore Perl: Good to see you again.
[10:10] Agent Heliosense: yes we're having a "meeting" which is generally question and answer all invited
[10:10] Hongjun Scarmon: May i talk with u?
[10:10] Agent Heliosense: surely
[10:10] Agent Heliosense: I'm here to answer questions about http://www.thetechvirtual.org and our project here, on 2 sims
[10:11] Garvie Garzo: hi....
[10:11] Agent Heliosense: Seafore didn't see you last week. wb.
[10:11] Agent Heliosense: hi Garvie
[10:11] Seafore Perl: Thanks. Busy with rl stuff. And also Burning Life project.
[10:12] Seafore Perl: Good to be free for this for a change!
[10:13] Agent Heliosense: Right that was a big production
[10:14] Seafore Perl: Yeah, my friend Alena and I entered the lottery. She got a plot so we were busy building.
[10:14] Agent Heliosense: what did you bguild
[10:14] Agent Heliosense: build
[10:14] Agent Heliosense: Garvie, Hongjun, Seafore do any of you do machinima?
[10:15] Garvie Garzo: i do
[10:15] Seafore Perl: Bunch of stuff. One was her idea for political commentary. She built statue of liberty, I built george bust, liberty lighting his hair on fire.
[10:15] Garvie Garzo: out of practise.. but dying to do more
[10:15] Seafore Perl: I don't, but would like to learn.
[10:15] Agent Heliosense: Mighty artistic Seafore!
[10:15] Seafore Perl: It's also sometimes only good way of capturing scripted builds.
[10:15] Garvie Garzo: seafore, i saw that grouping.. very nice
[10:15] Seafore Perl: Thanks.
[10:16] Agent Heliosense: Is Buring Life still up?
[10:16] Garvie Garzo: i don't think so
[10:16] Hongjun Scarmon: I am new here, I am curious about everything in SL
[10:16] Seafore Perl: They have this week to dismantle.
[10:16] Seafore Perl: It may be closed to all but builders now. I'm not sure.
[10:16] Agent Heliosense: Great Honjun, well we have some talented folks here.
[10:16] Garvie Garzo: still shows on map
[10:17] Agent Heliosense: Basically we are a real life museum and a digital museum both.
[10:17] Seafore Perl: Some are setting their builds up on their own plots for awhile. BL is providing lm's to sites that do that.
[10:17] Agent Heliosense: and in this room Hongjun are museum exhibits built by our group members
[10:17] Agent Heliosense: around 7 of them have been turned into real- musuem exhibits in San Jose, CA
[10:18] Agent Heliosense: I mention the machinima because a group called ICOM (International Council of Musuems) is planning a story for their magazine and perhaps a video.
[10:18] Hongjun Scarmon: I know, may i look around?
[10:19] Agent Heliosense: Please do!
[10:19] Hongjun Scarmon: thanks
[10:19] Garvie Garzo: how long is the vid?
[10:20] Agent Heliosense: Well they will be here filming on 10/16
[10:20] Garvie Garzo: ok
[10:21] Agent Heliosense: and so they are also looking for good machinima which is related to either what we are doing here, or museums in second life
[10:22] Garvie Garzo: ok, maybe they'd want some stuff from the sl to rl exhibits?
[10:22] Agent Heliosense: for adding to their video which will be used in Europe to get musuems interested in the virtual world -> musuem connection
[10:23] Agent Heliosense: There is no compensation except attribution / credits / resume benefits.
[10:23] Garvie Garzo: cool
[10:24] Agent Heliosense: I think it would be good to have a time lapse of building exhibits for example.
[10:24] Agent Heliosense: They are also interested in the rock-art here, which is done by avatar Bjorlyn Loon
[10:24] Seafore Perl: That would be. Always interesting to see the sequential steps of creating something.
[10:24] Seafore Perl: rock-art?
[10:24] Garvie Garzo: yes, that was relly good
[10:25] Agent Heliosense: Yes i'ts just outside the domed buidling here.
[10:25] Seafore Perl: Oh, the large cavelike structure with images on the walls?
[10:26] Agent Heliosense: Yes! Outside here, that's Bjorlyn Loon's build.
[10:26] Seafore Perl: That is an exceptional creation.
[10:26] Agent Heliosense: She's an expert on rock art, which interestes the musuem community especially.
[10:27] Agent Heliosense: So , the connection is - our Tech Virtual project is here to use virtual worlds aka. Second Life to generate museum exhibits in an internationally collaborative way.
[10:27] Agent Heliosense: And so the video that the group is making will be using the Tech Virtual as a focus.
[10:28] Agent Heliosense: So if you would like to film something and contribute it, our site allows the upload. Probably .mov is best for a final format.
[10:29] Seafore Perl: What length would be most useful?
[10:30] Agent Heliosense: I'd say around 2 mins. to 3 mins.
[10:31] Agent Heliosense: Even shorter actually, maybe 1 minute or less, edited.
[10:31] Seafore Perl: Thanks.
[10:32] Agent Heliosense: Our upcoming competition will also have a machinima component, so yourcan use footage for both purposes. The EU video or the upcoming round of exhibit building.
[10:32] Agent Heliosense: Which by the way, if you would like to build for, we have space!
[10:32] Agent Heliosense: the topic is "Art - FIlm - Music - Games" and the museum exhibits should connect these to the science behind them in an interactive way
[10:33] Seafore Perl: What's the deadline for this topic?
[10:33] Agent Heliosense: The only reason we havent announced or started this yet is because still getting topics within the categories narrowed down.
[10:34] Seafore Perl: How narrow?!
[10:34] Agent Heliosense: That topic will start "soonish" and run for couple of months so likely will run through early 2009.
[10:34] Seafore Perl: Still open?
[10:34] Agent Heliosense: Well, for example, within film are concepts like frames per second, point of view, storyboarding etc. so the curators are working on these.
[10:35] Agent Heliosense: Music has it's own sub-topics so, getting more specific on the topic rather than just "music" will be clearer.
[10:35] Garvie Garzo: ok
[10:36] Agent Heliosense: So the machinima tie-in with this EU group is not directly connected to that, except that it's an opportunity to be involved, generate material etc.
[10:37] Agent Heliosense: I"m going to create a machinima project for this on the http://www.thetechvirtual.org and will announce it.
[10:37] Seafore Perl: How about with art? And can I presume by this category you are referring to visual art? So many directions: rl art imported in strictly as is; art created only within the context of sl available tools (primarily 3 dimensional and texturing); and a combination, etc.
[10:38] Seafore Perl: (plus scripting, particles, movement, sound, etc.)
[10:38] Agent Heliosense: Right, it's a huge topic. Generally for the upcoming round the focus should be on art topics that could be explained in a real-life context.
[10:38] Agent Heliosense: rather than exclusive to SL or virtual.
[10:39] Seafore Perl: When you say explained, do you mean "experienced" in an rl environment?
[10:39] Seafore Perl: (or recreated to some extent in rl)
[10:39] Agent Heliosense: Exactly! Yes The Tech is a hands-on science museum.
[10:40] Agent Heliosense: As much as possible the focus is on brining educational experience into the exhibit, in an interactive way of course.
[10:40] Agent Heliosense: Some of the exhibits here are good examples.
[10:41] Agent Heliosense: Got ideas? Want to get a start? I'll set you up with a space!
[10:41] Seafore Perl: As we are prototyping a project, would there be someone available on occasion for technical advice as to the transference of exhibit into rl?
[10:41] Seafore Perl: And yes, I am interested!
[10:41] Agent Heliosense: Yes Seafore that's what i had in mind as well.
[10:42] Agent Heliosense: As this goes we'll have time to look at the creations, review, retool etc.
[10:42] Seafore Perl: Thanks. Let me know the particulars I need to get started. I already have the idea and concept and prototype. Just need to adjust it to the confines of the exhibit frame.
[10:43] Agent Heliosense: I hope to have space for 50 simultaneous exhibits at about 200 prims each as a general range.
[10:43] Agent Heliosense: Seafore we can pick out a space after wrapping up here.
[10:43] Agent Heliosense: did you do an exhibit before, in here?
[10:43] Seafore Perl: Ok. And size wise need to fit within the exhibit frame dimensions, correct?
[10:44] Agent Heliosense: yes. The frame is to scale the exhibit to something that can be built in RL.
[10:44] Seafore Perl: Not yet. Have been thinking about it, but had other projects, or waiting for another topic to work on. This one fits well.
[10:45] Agent Heliosense: Good, for past month I've been ordering the sim here and on teen grid and preparing the land allotment, it's now ready to go.
[10:45] Seafore Perl: Glad to hear that. That must be an exciting project.
[10:46] Garvie Garzo: i guess i owe you some packing up :)
[10:46] Agent Heliosense: smaller spaces than Burning Life but plenty big for exhibits. Also you can set specific media and walk onto the space.
[10:46] Agent Heliosense: Garvie you have an exhibit in here I think.
[10:47] Garvie Garzo: two i think
[10:47] Agent Heliosense: If you transfer a copy-transfer allowed copy to me, we are archiving them
[10:47] Garvie Garzo: i was MIA for most of the summer
[10:47] Garvie Garzo: yup
[10:47] Garvie Garzo: i'll test them and drop it on you later
[10:47] Agent Heliosense: so when you get a moment, just link into as few as possible and send em' over
[10:48] Garvie Garzo: okies
[10:48] Agent Heliosense: great thanks fo ryour help, it has been hard to get a hold of most people
[10:48] Garvie Garzo: if i send it soft linked cntrl 3 should bring it out in the right position
[10:48] Agent Heliosense: yes that works too.
[10:48] Garvie Garzo: they are linked as much as possible.. but both use rot scripts, so not fully linked
[10:49] Agent Heliosense: right you can group and TAKE and this will usually work.
[10:49] Agent Heliosense: as long as it is copy enabled, so that it can be deployed.
[10:49] Agent Heliosense: I envision that we may have special galleries for the topics here in SL.
[10:50] Agent Heliosense: right now, they re just bunched up here in teh workshop
[10:51] Garvie Garzo: i think we should turn this into gallery space and use the roff for the workshop
[10:51] Garvie Garzo: it is a BITCH to build under this ceiling
[10:51] Garvie Garzo: roof that was
[10:52] Agent Heliosense: Exactly!
[10:52] Agent Heliosense: It's maddening to build in here or even move things. as we know.
[10:52] Garvie Garzo: much swearing
[10:52] Garvie Garzo: plus, stuff gets lost
[10:52] Garvie Garzo: i was picking up bits MONTHS after i had taken things out
[10:53] Agent Heliosense: Yes these days are over!
[10:53] Seafore Perl: Do most build their exhibits here, or do some do part of build off site and then bring it in?
[10:53] Agent Heliosense: we have space now, prims and open air for building.
[10:53] Agent Heliosense: most build here
[10:53] Garvie Garzo: i made all of mine at home, and then brought them over.. but there's always fiddling latero
[10:54] Seafore Perl: I see. I also have a build platform above the space I'm on, where I do a lot of my creating.
[10:54] Seafore Perl: So you can do a combination?
[10:54] Agent Heliosense: I consider I'm decent at building and I think that's extremely hard to do if only for the camera limitation of the walls. I heard though that the cieling was removed for some time.
[10:54] Garvie Garzo: i recommend off site as much as possible
[10:54] Agent Heliosense: smart idea
[10:54] Garvie Garzo: tho it's fun to drop in and out see what other people are up to, help etc
[10:55] Seafore Perl: Are there any certain times when someone is available for technical advice on the exhibit build?
[10:55] Agent Heliosense: I'll make myself available business hours SL time, just let me know.
[10:55] Agent Heliosense: Also, our curators here in the RL Tech museum are on SL, I can pull them on.
[10:55] Seafore Perl: Questions such as feasability of transferring certain sl concepts into rl, etc.
[10:56] Seafore Perl: Ok. Would it be best just to IM you questions if they come up and then select a time to meet if necessary?
[10:56] Agent Heliosense: right. We have some talented folks here to give feedback.
[10:56] Seafore Perl: Ok. Great. Thaks.
[10:56] Agent Heliosense: ya that's fine!
[10:57] Agent Heliosense: We're nearing 11 you want to select a parcel? Garvie if you're interested too, you're welcome to pick a spot.
[10:57] Seafore Perl: sure.
[10:57] Agent Heliosense: ok
[10:58] Garvie Garzo: so this is for asrt film music upcoming
[10:58] Agent Heliosense: yes, lets go over to the tech 2,
