Open Source Exhibit Designers meeting 2008-09-16

by Bob Ketner last modified 2008-09-16 15:28

Q&A regarding open source design at The Tech followed by building and scripting

[10:02]  Alisa Cleanslate: Hi Agen
[10:03]  Agent Heliosense: h ialisa
[10:03]  Agent Heliosense: how are you
[10:03]  Alisa Cleanslate: Doing fine. What's up?
[10:04]  Agent Heliosense: oh just here for meeting if any new folks saw it on the calendar etc.
[10:04]  Agent Heliosense: we always get a few drop in s
[10:04]  Agent Heliosense: have you seen the new sim
[10:04]  Agent Heliosense: h TJ
[10:04]  TJ Asp: howdy
[10:04]  Alisa Cleanslate: No, is it up?
[10:05]  Agent Heliosense: yes it is! it's in sandbox mode at the moment
[10:05]  Alisa Cleanslate: I'll have to check it out.
[10:05]  TJ Asp: i'm amazed you guys don't pull more attendance at these meetings.
[10:05]  Agent Heliosense: meaning you can build etc. except things may be returned
[10:05]  TJ Asp: Is this mostly for staff?
[10:05]  Agent Heliosense: well this is a continuation of the project-based meetings
[10:05]  Agent Heliosense: i do it mostly for new folks in case they drop in
[10:06]  Agent Heliosense: also, was trying to track down and convert exhibits for permissions which Alisa's group did nicely!
[10:07]  Agent Heliosense: new sim is up, to the south of here
[10:07]  Agent Heliosense: it's a sandbox at the moment so check it out
[10:07]  TJ Asp: ok cool
[10:07]  Alisa Cleanslate: Are Lydia's exhibits done?
[10:07]  Agent Heliosense: items will be returned periodically as we put it together
[10:07]  Agent Heliosense: one of them
[10:08]  Alisa Cleanslate: Do you know when Kickstart Pump will be built in the real Tech.
[10:08]  Agent Heliosense: TJ did you build an exhibit last round or before?
[10:08]  TJ Asp: i don't remember exactly when it was.
[10:08]  Agent Heliosense: there's a kickstart pump on display now, in a little case but the real exhibition opens early 2009
[10:08]  TJ Asp: i was on bjorlyn loon's team on Sounds and spirit
[10:09]  Agent Heliosense: oh that is a great exhibit!
[10:09]  Alisa Cleanslate: Oh ok.
[10:09]  TJ Asp: not enough flash on it i think. it's a little subtle
[10:10]  Agent Heliosense: i put a photo of it up http://www.flickr.com/photos/thetechvirtual/
[10:10]  Agent Heliosense: the building is superb
[10:11]  TJ Asp: i learned something about SL friction.
[10:11]  TJ Asp: glass has less than wood.
[10:11]  TJ Asp: I have a pretty good 'water wheel' now, rock powered water wheel
[10:11]  Agent Heliosense: oh cool, does it rotate evenly with the incoming rocks then?
[10:12]  TJ Asp: yes
[10:12]  Agent Heliosense: should the parts be glass is that the secret ?
[10:12]  TJ Asp: the paddles collide with an auto rezzer which then drops a set number of rock into the buckets.
[10:12]  TJ Asp: it seems to work best with a glass axle
[10:13]  Agent Heliosense: nice
[10:13]  TJ Asp: doesnt look like glass, but that's the material it's set to
[10:13]  TJ Asp: I'll set it up on Tech 2 for ya
[10:13]  Agent Heliosense: who'd a thunk it?
[10:13]  TJ Asp: what tag do i need to build there?
[10:14]  Agent Heliosense: great perpetual motion
[10:14]  Agent Heliosense: Tech Exhibit Designers
[10:14]  TJ Asp: virtual-perpetual motion :-)
[10:14]  Agent Heliosense: check it out, s-p-a-c-e to do stuff
[10:15]  TJ Asp: had a little 'accident' on science friday a few days ago.
[10:15]  Agent Heliosense: Also, i'd like to add a little shop area like a museum gift shop, did i mention this before?
[10:15]  TJ Asp: spilled about 40 rocks from a skyplatform at 1,500m over 6 sims
[10:15]  TJ Asp: oops
[10:15]  Agent Heliosense: Uh oh what happened at Science Friday?
[10:15]  Agent Heliosense: like a meteor shower
[10:15]  TJ Asp: they were suppose to auto derez after one minute but i forgot to turn the script back on
[10:16]  Alisa Cleanslate: Oops
[10:16]  Agent Heliosense: what's 40 rocks on a Friday? I've heard of worse!
[10:16]  Agent Heliosense: were you disciplined?
[10:16]  TJ Asp: no
[10:16]  Alisa Cleanslate: Did anybody get hurt??
[10:17]  TJ Asp: took me an hour to clean up most of them
[10:17]  TJ Asp: no injuries were reported
[10:17]  Agent Heliosense: that was a huge crowd
[10:17]  Agent Heliosense: said they were going to take questions from SL but I didn't see that happen, didn't stay for it all
[10:18]  TJ Asp: o, it didn't happen during the show. WE ussually get 60 to 80 av's there.
[10:18]  TJ Asp: the SL questions get through fairly regularly
[10:18]  TJ Asp: depends on the topic
[10:19]  TJ Asp: ok so what's the 'open sim' concept all about?
[10:19]  Agent Heliosense: Open Sim is a reverse - engineered SL server that uses the same client browser
[10:20]  Agent Heliosense: so they are popping up grids now. Is that the one you mean?
[10:20]  TJ Asp: thought that was the topic of this meeting :-)
[10:21]  Agent Heliosense: I was saying Open Source in terms of our design here
[10:21]  TJ Asp: ah.. right
[10:21]  TJ Asp: my mistake.
[10:21]  Agent Heliosense: its the basis for this project
[10:21]  TJ Asp: i was taking with bjorlyn about open sim when i got the notice...
[10:21]  TJ Asp: got confused
[10:22]  Agent Heliosense: where, people design things in this way. It's like contributing to a stimulating group.
[10:23]  Agent Heliosense: Like, taking a design challenge and makingthe exhibit concept.
[10:23]  Agent Heliosense: the actual exhibit will be sourced from the concept but may not resemble the model
[10:23]  Agent Heliosense: hey check this out, you see that cell phone thing here
[10:24]  Agent Heliosense: so now, in the RL msueum they are mocking up the actual exhibit and how it may work.
[10:24]  Agent Heliosense: the blue-ish photo is here http://www.flickr.com/photos/thetechvirtual/
[10:25]  TJ Asp: the first 2?
[10:25]  TJ Asp: t mobile?
[10:25]  Agent Heliosense: here is its matching project page http://thetechvirtual.org/projects/ucantu-projects/cell-bazaar/
[10:25]  Agent Heliosense: yes
[10:26]  Agent Heliosense: it's from my phone camera....low light that's why it's blue
[10:26]  TJ Asp: oh so it's a game
[10:26]  Agent Heliosense: right, should be some kind of game
[10:27]  Agent Heliosense: so for example, I think that it's an interesting activity to make things/design these exhbits
[10:28]  TJ Asp: can't argue with that
[10:29]  Agent Heliosense: so, the concept of what's going on sometimes takes awhile to understand.
[10:29]  Agent Heliosense: so the meetings help clarify..... maybe for me too!
[10:31]  TJ Asp: i think i'll go take a look at tech 2
[10:31]  Agent Heliosense: ok lets do
[10:31]  Agent Heliosense: alisa?
[10:32]  Alisa Cleanslate: Yes, great.
[10:32]  Agent Heliosense: we're going over to the tech 2
[10:32]  Teleport completed from http://slurl.com/secondlife/The%20Tech/60/156/38
[10:33]  Agent Heliosense: enjoying the great outdoors
[10:33]  Alisa Cleanslate: Thanks
[10:36]  Agent Heliosense: fantatstic
[10:36]  TJ Asp: seems to have pretty stable motion
[10:36]  TJ Asp: around the axlw
[10:36]  TJ Asp: axle
[10:37]  Agent Heliosense: my question is, if it's physical how does it levitate in the air
[10:37]  Alisa Cleanslate: was this from the class the other day?
[10:38]  Agent Heliosense: yes, TJ got good results
[10:38]  TJ Asp: there it is with auto rezzer
[10:38]  Alisa Cleanslate: I should say, really good.
[10:38]  TJ Asp: the smale axle throught the middle isn't physical
[10:38]  Agent Heliosense: so, do you link them right?
[10:38]  TJ Asp: the sim physics sometimes can't keepup and it stops unexpectedly
[10:38]  TJ Asp: apparently
[10:39]  TJ Asp: yes, the moving parts are linked
[10:39]  TJ Asp: but that rod and side plate are a separate objecct
[10:39]  Agent Heliosense: i see, axle is not physical
[10:39]  Agent Heliosense: i had a physical axle on non-physical bearings
[10:40]  TJ Asp: oops
[10:40]  Agent Heliosense: this is a non-physical axle with physical bearings
[10:40]  TJ Asp: that's how accidents happen
[10:40]  TJ Asp: sorry about that
[10:40]  TJ Asp: that's right
[10:40]  TJ Asp: the center is non phsical
[10:40]  TJ Asp: seems easier to constrain it that way
[10:40]  Agent Heliosense: wow amazing the possibilities
[10:41]  TJ Asp: the rezzer was rezzing on collision and this bigger rock was rezed too close to it and triggered the next rock being rezzed.. etc.. etc...
[10:46]  Agent Heliosense: lets see
[10:47]  Agent Heliosense: did we determine your ratio was the secret on the axle
[10:48]  Agent Heliosense: or maybe it's the balancing
[10:49]  Alisa Cleanslate: Ok guys, interesting, but i have to go. see you next time.
[10:50]  TJ Asp: bye
[10:50]  Agent Heliosense: OK thanks alisa
[10:52]  chicken-and-egg-Rezzer-by-Agent2036-copyable: No longer rezzing spheres.
[10:52]  chicken-and-egg-Rezzer-by-Agent2036-copyable: Rezzing spheres now.
[10:53]  chicken-and-egg-Rezzer-by-Agent2036-copyable: Hello, Avatar!
[10:53]  chicken-and-egg-Rezzer-by-Agent2036-copyable: Rezzing spheres now.
[10:54]  TJ Asp: lol that's some nice action :-)
[10:55]  Agent Heliosense: hmm it's not that even though
[10:55]  TJ Asp: i was trying to make a tread mill, for my av
[10:55]  TJ Asp: but i do'nt think i'm heavy enough.
[10:56]  TJ Asp: so i rezzed a big block and wore it on my head
[10:56]  TJ Asp: didn''t seem to make any difference
[10:56]  TJ Asp: there's definitely some kind of 'inertia'
[10:56]  TJ Asp: it takes more rocks to get mine started that to keep it going
[10:59]  Agent Heliosense: i think the ratio of axle to the wheel makes it smooth , as i recall?
[10:59]  TJ Asp: want me to leave this thing here?
[10:59]  TJ Asp: i think that's right
[11:00]  Agent Heliosense: if you like, it may be returned, that's all
[11:00]  TJ Asp: that's fine
[11:00]  chicken-and-egg-Rezzer-by-Agent2036-copyable: No longer rezzing spheres.
[11:00]  TJ Asp: did it just stop on your screen?
[11:00]  Agent Heliosense: yes
[11:02]  Agent Heliosense: hampstere time!
[11:02]  TJ Asp: didn't seem to work
[11:02]  TJ Asp: the motion will probably be disturbed by other activity on the sim
[11:02]  TJ Asp: demanding server time
[11:03]  Agent Heliosense: were you able to walk on it with a weight on
[11:07]  TJ Asp: the block on my head didn't seem to make any difference
[11:08]  TJ Asp: hmm
[11:08]  TJ Asp: this certainly seems to make a difference
[11:09]  Agent Heliosense: was afk
[11:10]  Agent Heliosense: it works better?
[11:10]  Agent Heliosense: wow good
[11:10]  TJ Asp: maybe not
[11:10]  Agent Heliosense: physical rock?
[11:12]  TJ Asp: i reduced the size of the axle again
[11:12]  TJ Asp: seems to have a hard time starting up
[11:12]  TJ Asp: but now it's a little sloppy
[11:13]  TJ Asp: I'm going to take off.
[11:13]  TJ Asp: congrats on the new sim
[11:13]  TJ Asp: see you around
[11:14]  Agent Heliosense: ok tj
