Garvie Garzo: sorry i've been so mia
[9:58]  Shakini Parnass: no problem
[9:58]  Ulysse Alexandre: helo Stephe
[9:58]  Garvie Garzo: i've done nothing in sl because mu rl life as gardener has dominated the last 2 weeks
[9:59]  Shakini Parnass: i'm going to be mia myself soon for a meeting!
[9:59]  You: Hi, folks, hi Garvie, long time no see
[9:59]  Garvie Garzo: that';s almost done now, so i'll be back as much as possible as soon as possible
[9:59]  Shakini Parnass: what are you growing?
[9:59]  Garvie Garzo: i know
[9:59]  Garvie Garzo: i have barely logged in for WEEKS
[9:59]  Garvie Garzo: i plant flowers for pubs businesses and a community guerila group
[10:00]  Garvie Garzo: i design and buy and plant and organize and then take care ofthem throughoutthe summer
[10:00]  Shakini Parnass: do community guerillas eat the flowers
[10:00]  You: Bonjour, Ulysse
[10:00]  Garvie Garzo: some do
[10:00]  Garvie Garzo: this commiunity anyway
[10:00]  Garvie Garzo: actually this tyear i'm featuring mostly different kinds ofpeppers in the guerilla space
[10:01]  You: hi, Vince
[10:01]  Ulysse Alexandre: hwllo Vince
[10:01]  Vince Caudron: hi
[10:01]  Shakini Parnass: i saw the most amazing collection of peppers in mexico
[10:01]  Shakini Parnass: hi vince
[10:02]  You: shall we go chill out in the pool as we talk?
[10:02]  Garvie Garzo: ok
[10:02]  Garvie Garzo: where is it, lawn?
[10:02]  Shakini Parnass: si
[10:02]  You: yes, right behind me
[10:03]  Garvie Garzo: lydia cracks me up
[10:03]  You: click on one of the white pose balls and choose sit here
[10:04]  Shakini Parnass: so garvie, i picked up a SACH foot the other day to do a mockup of the RL exhibit of the jaipur foot
[10:04]  Garvie Garzo: cool
[10:05]  Shakini Parnass: SACH stands for solid ankle cushion heel
[10:05]  Garvie Garzo: i haven't even finished the descriptive proposal on that one
[10:05]  Garvie Garzo: yes, it's an amazingly good design kinetically
[10:05]  Shakini Parnass: i got a tour of a prosthetics factory that makes 90% of the world's upper extremity devices
[10:05]  Shakini Parnass: and they are also starting to work on a foot, but it will be a "flex foot" with sensors inside
[10:06]  Garvie Garzo: that's impressive
[10:06]  You: whare is the factory?
[10:06]  You: where
[10:06]  Shakini Parnass: it was, they've been working on it for 2 years
[10:06]  Garvie Garzo: still cheap like the jaipu?r
[10:06]  Shakini Parnass: the factory is in campbell, about 15 minutes away from san jose
[10:06]  Shakini Parnass: i don't know what the price will be
[10:07]  Shakini Parnass: they did say that they work with a lot of medicare/medicaid patients, so they are definitely aware of the need for low-cost devices
[10:07]  Shakini Parnass: apparently they will customize the amount of work they do based on what people can afford
[10:07]  Garvie Garzo: that's a good approach
[10:07]  Shakini Parnass: one of the biggest challenges, is the number of "inputs" to control the devices, particularly for upper extremities
[10:08]  Garvie Garzo: sometimes design schools will build prosthetics for free as seniorprojects
[10:08]  Garvie Garzo: even the artcollege that i was at did that
[10:08]  Shakini Parnass: btw -- is everyone okay with us saving the chat dialog today so we can post it for others who couldn't make it today?
[10:08]  Garvie Garzo: yes
[10:08]  Vince Caudron: yES
[10:08]  Ulysse Alexandre: yes
[10:08]  Shakini Parnass: thanx
[10:08]  You: I went into the real Museum and took some good pictures of the Kickstart Pump and the Lifeline Radio
[10:09]  Lydia Milner is Online
[10:09]  You: nearly got nabbed by the Museum Police
[10:09]  Garvie Garzo: lol
[10:09]  Ulysse Alexandre: lol
[10:09]  Shakini Parnass: i called the folks at kiva and sent them an email to let them know about your project in SL
[10:09]  Shakini Parnass: but haven't heard back yet
[10:09]  Garvie Garzo: super
[10:09]  Garvie Garzo: what was their response???
[10:10]  Garvie Garzo: ok
[10:10]  Shakini Parnass: i would think they'd be very excited...
[10:10]  Garvie Garzo: i'm hopingthat they like the idea.. especially the laterplans
[10:10]  Garvie Garzo: do you think that they have much of a 'feel' for what sl is all about..
[10:10]  Lydia Milner: Hiya sorry I am late

[10:15]  You: ty Ulysse
[10:16]  Garvie Garzo: ta
[10:16]  Ulysse Alexandre: This exhibit is about the religion in Ancient Egypt
[10:16]  Lydia Milner: hi, oh good Stephe. I ahve started building the pump, usung the
[10:16]  Lydia Milner: line diagram on their webpage, but it only shows form one angel, more angles woudl be useful
[10:17]  Shakini Parnass: great, i'll definitely check it out later
[10:17]  Lydia Milner: Ih ave tried calling all three organsiatons in RL but no-one anwers the phone lol
[10:17]  Lydia Milner: answerphns
[10:17]  Lydia Milner: I dedcided to do that irritating thing of just hanging up
[10:17]  Shakini Parnass: i have been playing phonetag with martin at kickstart
[10:17]  Lydia Milner: its a lot to exlpain in a phn msg :)

[10:18]  Shakini Parnass: since i need to talk with him anyways, maybe you could let me know what you need?
[10:18]  Lydia Milner: some fo the info and resrouces I want are on htier webpages so iu was gonna keep trying
[10:19]  Lydia Milner: sure, I will need to review the webpage and send you a list, that woudl be great
[10:19]  Shakini Parnass: do you have his email address?
[10:19]  Garvie Garzo: do any ofthe orgs have representatives in CA?.. since we're all about to be there being social?
[10:19]  Lydia Milner: I have some time off now so I am hoping to do more work
[10:19]  Lydia Milner: honest :)
[10:19]  Garvie Garzo: lol
[10:19]  Shakini Parnass: yes, coincidentally both kickstart and kiva are based in SF
[10:19]  Garvie Garzo: garvie looks at flooragain
[10:20]  Garvie Garzo: ok, then maybe we can just MEET them
[10:20]  Lydia Milner: (Hey. garvie, lets set off the fire alarm, then no-onw will know we havent done our homework :))

[10:22]  Lydia Milner: I dont want ot be away from my duahger for too long
[10:22]  Shakini Parnass: you'll barely be over your jetlag!
[10:22]  Lydia Milner: never been away from her before :)
[10:22]  Lydia Milner: yeah, I'm hoping it will be so quick my body wont notice :)
[10:22]  Garvie Garzo: yeah, first time is hard
[10:22]  Garvie Garzo: it'll be worse for you than her tho
[10:22]  Draxtor Despres is Online
[10:22]  Lydia Milner: yeah, I'm a big wuss
[10:22]  Lydia Milner: she wont notice :)
[10:23]  You: sorry, afk
[10:23]  Garvie Garzo: oh no, she'll notice
[10:23]  You: back now
[10:23]  Ulysse Alexandre: it's better East-West then West-East
[10:23]  Shakini Parnass: so, i have a meeting with a set designer for the RL exhibit and have to go. i won't be avialable for the 3rd either but will join you all on the 10th.
[10:23]  Garvie Garzo: but she won;'t have the attenbtion span yet to worry orfret much
[10:23]  Shakini Parnass: have a great time at the opening!!
[10:23]  Lydia Milner: thanks shainiki, have un in Europe :)
[10:23]  Shakini Parnass: bye -- stephe is going to be here for the remainder
[10:23]  Lydia Milner: any news on how the market layout thingy is coming?
[10:23]  Garvie Garzo: we'll make something soon, i swear
[10:24]  Lydia Milner: I think last week Shakini said that there are a few ddesigns in teh offing
[10:24]  Lydia Milner: lol
[10:24]  Shakini Parnass: thanks -- look forward to seeing what happens over the next few weeks.
[10:24]  Shakini Parnass is Offline
[10:24]  Lydia Milner: Sunday night is homework night right? :)
[10:24]  You: So, Lydia I got some pics of the Kickstart pump
[10:24]  Lydia Milner: oh great!
[10:24]  Garvie Garzo: actually i really won't get much done until AFTERcalifornia
[10:24]  Lydia Milner: i have started building it
[10:25]  You: we have a real one in the Museum
[10:25]  Lydia Milner: but only got one angle
[10:25]  Garvie Garzo: do you need an animation for that?
[10:25]  Garvie Garzo: orare you just making a model ofthe pump?
[10:25]  Lydia Milner: ah yes of course, I can bunk off hten and not build until i have see nit in real life hee hee
[10:25]  Lydia Milner: no i'm doing an anim also
[10:25]  You: it really needs a scriot and an animation, I should think
[10:25]  Lydia Milner: thats one of ht reasons I picked kickstart
[10:26]  Garvie Garzo: it's definitely a complicated idea to pull off
[10:26]  Garvie Garzo: good one tho
[10:26]  You: I'll send you thie pics
[10:26]  Lydia Milner: thats great thanks Stephe
[10:27]  Lydia Milner: fgoquest the idea is coming together, need to get hold of them though
[10:27]  Lydia Milner: and the glasses again I cchose for the anims so that will be fun
[10:27]  Garvie Garzo: omg three?
[10:27]  Lydia Milner: yes
[10:27]  Garvie Garzo: lol
[10:27]  You: wow
[10:27]  Lydia Milner: i predict rainy summ eron England :)
[10:28]  Lydia Milner: or, i could spend the time improving my typing,
[10:28]  Lydia Milner: but, naah
[10:28]  Ulysse Alexandre: it is an easy guess :)
[10:28]  Garvie Garzo: we all could
[10:28]  Lydia Milner: lol
[10:28]  Garvie Garzo: i still need a keyboard with working space bar
[10:28]  You: not sure how the fogquest works, but weve got lots of fog in San Francisco where I live
[10:28]  Lydia Milner: have yous tried ahking it?
[10:28]  Lydia Milner: shaking
[10:28]  Lydia Milner: or poking it with a wooden nail file?
[10:28]  Garvie Garzo: it's really just a collection device
[10:28]  Garvie Garzo: very simple
[10:28]  Garvie Garzo: it's a survial technique
[10:28]  You: youcouldjusttrywritinglikethis
[10:29]  Garvie Garzo: spread plasticor net and collect dew and foge
[10:29]  Lydia Milner: lol, I wonder how long that could go and still make sense?
[10:29]  Lydia Milner: how is kiva coming Garvie?
[10:30]  Garvie Garzo: idowritelikethatallthetimenow..worstisit'sLOOKSlikehowithinkanywaywithafewextraxcgharactersthroeninaswell
[10:30]  Lydia Milner: lol
[10:30]  Garvie Garzo: haven't domne a thing yet
[10:30]  Ulysse Alexandre: quite hard to decipher Garvie
[10:30]  Lydia Milner: lol
[10:31]  Lydia Milner: so we're all at the sam epalace then
[10:31]  Lydia Milner: well, I ahvce three sheets of lfip chart with drawings on them
[10:31]  Garvie Garzo: but the idea is crystal clear, so it's just a matter of commiting to a couple days building and scropting and installing
[10:31]  Lydia Milner: thats how i work
[10:31]  Garvie Garzo: the foot is more of a probelm since i can't get the impact of landmines out of my head...
[10:31]  Garvie Garzo: but in reality the vast majority are used for polio victims
[10:32]  Lydia Milner: so are you still keeping the landmine idea in?
[10:32]  Garvie Garzo: yes, i think so...
[10:33]  Garvie Garzo: i want to make the approach to the hut/exhibit sort of an obstacle course
[10:33]  Garvie Garzo: and then have the foot inside as a sort of icon
[10:33]  Garvie Garzo: i was thinking floor sensors that will trigger sounds and large particles with pictures...
[10:34]  You: do they have the Jaipur foot in places like Sri Lanka where they have landmines
[10:34]  You: ?
[10:34]  Garvie Garzo: so the landmine might end up being a sort of metaphorical device rather than a part ofthe problem
[10:34]  Garvie Garzo: yes
[10:34]  Lydia Milner: and would that work the sam ein an RL version? the obstalce course?
[10:34]  Garvie Garzo: it could
[10:35]  Garvie Garzo: it would depend on how 'upsetting' you wanted to make it
[10:35]  Ulysse Alexandre: it is more easy to do particle in SL then in RL
[10:35]  Garvie Garzo: so say the obstacle course could take the form of something relatively bengn, like a pile of homemde critches..
[10:36]  Lydia Milner: yes, Ulysse, I was thinking of visitors with disability or very small children etc and how they woudl cope with it?
[10:36]  Garvie Garzo: or it could go as afr as fliskering images of victims and sounds of explosions and screans
[10:36]  Garvie Garzo: yes
[10:36]  Garvie Garzo: particles wouldn't work in rl.. could be flickering video images
[10:37]  Ulysse Alexandre: on large screen
[10:37]  Ulysse Alexandre: yes it could be
[10:37]  Lydia Milner: Stephe, has something weird hapended to the grass here? It looks odd
[10:37]  Garvie Garzo: the point is to have the outside ofthe hut problematic to make it obvious how good a solution is available inside the hut
[10:38]  Lydia Milner: yes
[10:38]  Garvie Garzo: i see people struggling to GET to this since it IS fundamentally a mobility problem that hasto be solved
[10:38]  Ulysse Alexandre: with is the size of a hut?
[10:38]  Lydia Milner: Stephe has a loayout for the exhibt been decided yet?
[10:38]  Garvie Garzo: smallish
[10:38]  You: maybe have folks try waling with a prosthesis?
[10:39]  Garvie Garzo: a little biggerthan a confession booth,... maybe a very small examination style room
[10:39]  You: Yse, Shakini has a floor plan, I think
[10:39]  Garvie Garzo: i also like a long steep flight ofsteps that cannot be climbed...
[10:39]  Lydia Milner: is she putting that on the web?
[10:39]  Garvie Garzo: with the foot at the top.. an ICONIC representation
[10:39]  You: good idea, I'll ask her
[10:39]  Lydia Milner: thanks
[10:39]  Lydia Milner: that sounds interseting
[10:39]  You: she's meeting with her set designer right now
[10:40]  Lydia Milner: oh good
[10:41]  You: Maybe post both the floor plan and the set design sketcheson the wall in Parkside
[10:41]  Garvie Garzo: that would be really handy
[10:41]  Lydia Milner: thats a nice idea :)
[10:41]  Ulysse Alexandre: yes
[10:41]  Garvie Garzo: it would help get us all on the same page
[10:41]  Garvie Garzo: unlike last time..
[10:41]  You: lol
[10:42]  You: Ulysse, have you thought of doing an exhibit for UcanTu?
[10:42]  Ulysse Alexandre: not yet, but I think hard :)
[10:42]  Garvie Garzo: :)
[10:43]  Garvie Garzo: did you look at the possible projects yet?
[10:43]  Lydia Milner: :) it's good fun!
[10:43]  You: did you check out the possible topics at http://thetechvirtual.org/project/ucantu ?
[10:43]  Ulysse Alexandre: I have the project to rebuild a Roman Villa
[10:43]  Garvie Garzo: it really is fun.. and it forces you to learn new skills fasterthan you would without a direction
[10:43]  Lydia Milner: oh that sounds interesting!
[10:44]  Garvie Garzo: i was only 5 weeks old when i started musical chairs..
[10:44]  Garvie Garzo: i hadnever even built a chair
[10:44]  Draxtor Despres is Offline
[10:44]  You: wow, you learned fast!

[10:46]  Garvie Garzo: yeah, seems odd
[10:46]  Garvie Garzo: better job?
[10:47]  Ulysse Alexandre: as she other project?
[10:47]  Garvie Garzo: she seesms committed to museums
[10:47]  You: not yet, but I'm sure there will be. She's been working too hard too long to get AFM done, and I think she's burned out
[10:48]  Ulysse Alexandre: oh!
[10:48]  Garvie Garzo: sucks
[10:48]  Lydia Milner: oh gosh, thats doesnt sound too good
[10:48]  Garvie Garzo: maybe a leave ora vacation is better then?
[10:48]  Lydia Milner: are one of you guys replacing her?
[10:48]  You: she'll be here until 6/16
[10:48]  Garvie Garzo: i hope she stays in museums in sl
[10:48]  Lydia Milner: yes
[10:49]  Garvie Garzo: i have a feeling she's already madea big impact and could go much farther
[10:49]  You: well, besides me we are getting a new guy next month
[10:49]  You: with a lot of SL experience
[10:49]  Garvie Garzo: she's so good at getting people working and interested
[10:49]  Lydia Milner: can yout ell us who he is?
[10:49]  Garvie Garzo: lol
[10:49]  Garvie Garzo: is he cute eg?
[10:49]  Garvie Garzo: single?

[11:24]  Garvie Garzo: breather is a good way to put it
[11:24]  Lydia Milner: lol i have been SO lucky with timings and things. I was booked onthis course way before the Tech stuff started for me, and it all gelled so nicely, ish, a few weeks out and I would ve been totally done for

[11:26]  Garvie Garzo: i'm surethat after california and bouncing ideas in person, we will all come back raring to go
[11:26]  Lydia Milner: yes thats a good point
[11:26]  Lydia Milner: is hte final deadline for ucantu set in stone Stephe?
[11:27]  You: that's a question for Shakini
[11:27]  Garvie Garzo: have you guys thought of trying a classified ad?
[11:27]  Lydia Milner: if the same ppl are invcolced in Ucantu as AFM then
[11:27]  Lydia Milner: we will run into our own resrouce issues
[11:27]  Garvie Garzo: yes

[11:29]  Ulysse Alexandre: Where is Surpoe ?
[11:29]  Garvie Garzo: lol
[11:29]  Garvie Garzo: near the dardenelles
[11:29]  Lydia Milner: lol
[11:29]  You: Yes we do need new blood. We're working on it.
[11:29]  Garvie Garzo: maybe a classified?
[11:29]  You: classified in SL?
[11:29]  Lydia Milner: how about a museum mag in RL?
[11:29]  You: or RL?
[11:30]  Garvie Garzo: i hate how groups work.. that ifyou want to announce something no matter what, you are immediately derrided asa spammer
[11:30]  Garvie Garzo: yes, callsified in sl
[11:30]  You: cool. Where?
[11:30]  Garvie Garzo: click on your profile under classified
[11:31]  You: k
[11:31]  Lydia Milner: is stys on your profile STephe so you may want to do it as Janus
[11:31]  Garvie Garzo: but read some classifieds first
[11:31]  Garvie Garzo: maybe the help wanted ads
[11:31]  Lydia Milner: key worods are important
[11:31]  Lydia Milner: words
[11:31]  Garvie Garzo: orart opportunities
[11:31]  Garvie Garzo: yes, key words are the whole deal
[11:31]  Lydia Milner: then they come up in search, when ppl search ALL or CLASSIFIEDS
[11:31]  Garvie Garzo: museum, builders, wanted, fun, interactive, science
[11:32]  Garvie Garzo: maybe hot hot sex
[11:32]  Lydia Milner: classifieds can be grouped e.g. education
[11:32]  You: lol
[11:32]  Lydia Milner: lol I wouldnt use the word builder, you want word that can only be for this or something similar
[11:32]  Garvie Garzo: ok
[11:32]  Garvie Garzo: exhibit
[11:32]  Ulysse Alexandre: museum
[11:32]  Lydia Milner: look at some other sl museums or science places and see what their classifieds are
[11:32]  Lydia Milner: or best bet search calssifieds and see what you find, then you know your competiton
[11:33]  Garvie Garzo: yes, i have been to almost every other thing called a museum
[11:33]  Garvie Garzo: most are small private affairs
[11:33]  Garvie Garzo: you really are fairly unique with the open source design concept..
[11:33]  You: I was thinking of a poster: CREATIVE AND TALENTED, NEEDING TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY -- the Tech Needs You!
[11:34]  Garvie Garzo: we just need some way oftelling people that we are open for business.. so to speak
[11:34]  Garvie Garzo: yes, that's good
[11:34]  Lydia Milner: i tihnk you guys coudl do with an SL expced Pr firm
[11:34]  Garvie Garzo: just eager to join would be plenty at this point
[11:34]  Garvie Garzo: that's an idea too
[11:34]  Lydia Milner: to do a blast program of mktg in SL and RL, targeted at relevent ppl in RL and anyone intestered in SL
[11:35]  Lydia Milner: otehrwise you would miss the likes or Garvie and me :)
[11:35]  Lydia Milner: if you onyl targeted museum ppl in SL
[11:35]  Garvie Garzo: lol
[11:35]  Garvie Garzo: excellent point
[11:35]  You: wouldn't want to do that!
[11:35]  Garvie Garzo: i did try to get OUT ofthis at first
[11:35]  Lydia Milner: and what would S life be like wihtout us huh?:)
[11:35]  You: dullsville
[11:35]  Garvie Garzo: it was the word brainstormingthat got me here in the first place, for what it's worth
[11:35]  Lydia Milner: :)
[11:36]  Lydia Milner: thats good feedback there!
[11:36]  You: cool
[11:36]  Ulysse Alexandre: we must draft artist too
[11:36]  Garvie Garzo: maybe pay for billboards in schools
[11:36]  Lydia Milner: is there a generic university press?
[11:36]  Garvie Garzo: i take a TON ofclasses, especiuially in the begiinning
[11:36]  Lydia Milner: or webpage that goes to many unis?
[11:36]  You: The Tech has done a good deal of PR in RL, but not in SL
[11:36]  Garvie Garzo: and i often checked out places on the ads..
[11:37]  You: Bjorlyn has offered to help us in SL
[11:37]  Garvie Garzo: becaiuse i really didn't know aboutsearch orhow to get around
[11:37]  You: she does Science Firday
[11:37]  Garvie Garzo: butth ads are all for unrelated crap like body piercings..
[11:37]  Lydia Milner: thats good
[11:37]  Lydia Milner: i beleive there are SL specific PR firms
[11:37]  Garvie Garzo: whereas someone learning to make things might be very interested to know someone willing to have things made
[11:38]  Lydia Milner: how about SL uni's, ask them if you can place a billboard there
[11:38]  Garvie Garzo: yes, exact;y
[11:38]  You: good idea
[11:38]  Lydia Milner: and other creative places like book island
[11:38]  Lydia Milner: I kknow onel fo theoweners there
[11:38]  Garvie Garzo: tui hasthe most building classes
[11:38]  Garvie Garzo: sl u is good too

[11:39]  Garvie Garzo: it's technical user interface
[11:39]  Garvie Garzo: there are a dozen or so building classes everyday
[11:39]  You: k
[11:40]  Lydia Milner: if you can put otgether a plan for sLa nd RL mktg quickly, or even just SL, the summit on 4th may boost and build on thiat
[11:40]  You: Great, thanks for all the terrific tips. Lot's to do and think about
[11:40]  Lydia Milner: is there any press coverage of the summit arranged in RL?
[11:40]  Lydia Milner: and could get SL press to cover the transmit in here on 4th?

[11:43]  Lydia Milner: ok, woudl you be able to let m know if that is ok?
[11:43]  Garvie Garzo: i told the editor ofthe herald aboutthe summit, who is a philosopher in RL... thinking he might come
[11:43]  Garvie Garzo: but he doesn't KNOW me, and i work in a difeerent field, and so i think he likely just ignored the note :(
