[10:12] Shakini Parnass: phyona - is this your first ucantu meeting?
[10:12] Phyona Masala: yeah. usually I'm at work at this time, but it's a holiday today :)
[10:12] Phyona Masala: so thought I'd check it out
[10:13] Shakini Parnass: welcome! i just gave you some info
[10:13] Phyona Masala: thanks :)
[10:13] Dancers Yao: yes welcome
[10:15] Shakini Parnass: if you have any particular interests in the exhibit building/design process, please let us know as several of the folks here have projects underway and could use some help
[10:15] Shakini Parnass: lydia, you've been super busy getting your projects up and running -- do you want to give us an update?
[10:15] Lydia Milner: heehee, not that busy really, I am rahter maxed out in Rl this week.
[10:15] Lydia Milner: But I have put up 5 of the kiosks and started buidling.
[10:16] Lydia Milner: I snuck in for an hour last week when I shouldve been doing something else....
[10:16] Lydia Milner: and Mars came by and helped me with a script, which saved me time struggling with it :)
[10:16] You: lol, a productive hour
[10:16] Lydia Milner: so now I ahve the corn to 'grow up' out of the ground ont eh kcikstart
[10:16] Lydia Milner: yes, its amazing what you can do when you get in the zone lol
[10:16] Kat Lemieux is Online
[10:17] Draxtor Despres is Online
[10:17] Lydia Milner: I have been on a mangt course in RL and thought the rest of my assingments were due end July, but it was end June lol
[10:17] Shakini Parnass: we're sending out a newsletter to tech staff and volunteers sometime soon, so we may have some more people to help out on the projects soon
[10:17] Lydia Milner: So i have wangled an extension and have mostlyl self banned myself from SL until I;'m done
[10:18] Shakini Parnass: whats a mangt course?
[10:18] Lydia Milner: oh that sounds good. I asked Mars if he weanted to offer up to help out but he wasnt free to commit right now, a helpful and clever guy though :)
[10:18] Lydia Milner: management, sorry :)
[10:18] Lydia Milner: institute of line management
[10:18] Shakini Parnass: ha ha
[10:19] Lydia Milner: loly ou shoudl see my handwriting!
[10:19] Lydia Milner: ugh
[10:19] Lydia Milner: worse than my typing even!
[10:19] Lydia Milner: ok, well kickstart is coming on good, I have almost finished selecting the assets off their webpage to use
[10:19] Lydia Milner: Have not started that selection process with the others, but that wont take me long
[10:20] Shakini Parnass: excellent -- we just brough one down to the shop to have them start working on kidproofing it
[10:20] Lydia Milner: lol that must be fun!
[10:20] Shakini Parnass: lots of sharp edges, chains, and other places that kids could gettheir fingers caught
[10:20] Lydia Milner: I have put sketches on the wiki but not any more info yet, descrition etc. I am woefully behind on that
[10:20] Lydia Milner: ah, ok
[10:21] Shakini Parnass: stephe said you needed closeup photos of the pump?
[10:21] Lydia Milner: yes that would be great, not essnetial but makes it more real
[10:21] Lydia Milner: e.g. of the label on the pump, so that I cam make a texture of it and apply it onthe pump here
[10:21] Shakini Parnass: guess we'll be sending stephe on a field trip to the shop sometime soon...
[10:22] Lydia Milner: and as many shots at different angles to get the shape right, but again, if it is going to be partically encased in RL for safety, then maybe a 'representation' of the real shape would be ok here
[10:22] Lydia Milner: lol
[10:22] Lydia Milner: leave a trail of breadcrumbs :)
[10:22] Lydia Milner: that would be great thanks :)
[10:22] Lydia Milner: oh he's cute!
[10:23] You: so here's the new recruiting poster. Thanks to all the suggestions Friday
[10:23] Alisa Cleanslate: Nice
[10:23] Lydia Milner: have you done all those annoying panels now?
[10:23] You: I just set up our display at the SL5B birthday expo
[10:24] Dancers Yao: can you reverse it again Stephe?
[10:24] You: reverse?
[10:24] Ulysse Alexandre: I can testimony for Stephe :)
[10:24] Dancers Yao accepted your inventory offer.
[10:24] Dancers Yao: put it beind you like on
[10:25] Dancers Yao: thxx got it
[10:25] Shakini Parnass: Dancers, any new developments on your project?
[10:26] Dancers Yao: yes....I have the intro videos, now working on the media parcel
[10:26] Dancers Yao: Stephe....love the image!
[10:27] Shakini Parnass: Alisa - how are things going with you?
[10:27] Alisa Cleanslate: I've been working with Dancers on machinima.
[10:28] Alisa Cleanslate: I was hoping Garvie would be here, because I have questions I thought she could help with.
[10:28] Dancers Yao: That's the next thing I want to install - to see if people can play the video. Alisa is helping
[10:28] Lydia Milner: can anyone else help?
[10:28] Lydia Milner: or you could im her?
[10:29] Alisa Cleanslate: She wants to put people image on the drum using machinima, but I don't understand how to get the images from outside sl in. lol
[10:29] Alisa Cleanslate: Also to create a screen for the videos she has.
[10:29] Shakini Parnass: stephe - do ou know how to do that?
[10:30] Lydia Milner: I tihnk i have some info somewhere i can check for you, later
[10:30] Lydia Milner: i think u need a url to stream it in
[10:30] Alisa Cleanslate: Ah
[10:30] Alisa Cleanslate: Thanks
[10:31] You: I think you can run only one video in a parcel
[10:31] Lydia Milner: yes
[10:31] You: and I believe it has to be stored somewhere else, and streamed into SL
[10:31] Lydia Milner: but i think it works if you section off the land here
[10:32] Alisa Cleanslate: That makes sense.
[10:32] Dancers Yao: Could the video also be played from a repository or stored somewhere to play
[10:32] Lydia Milner: to a parcel, not the whole sim
[10:32] Lydia Milner: some is secitoned isnt it?
[10:32] You: I don't know if it is now, but it could be
[10:33] Dancers Yao: One video is 4 minutes, the other is 1 min. Can they be put together to play on one screen?
[10:34] You: can you glue them back-to-back?
[10:34] Dancers Yao: yes
[10:34] You: to make one longer one?
[10:34] Dancers Yao: yes
[10:34] Lydia Milner: ok, i have a book here, the vid needs to be quicktime and stored on a server
[10:34] Shakini Parnass: ulysse -- are you working on a project as well?
[10:34] Dancers Yao: thx
[10:35] Ulysse Alexandre: not yet, but I think hard to have one too :)
[10:35] Shakini Parnass: you mean to start a new one?
[10:35] Ulysse Alexandre: or may be be involved in one ofthe Ucan too project
[10:35] Shakini Parnass: great
[10:36] Shakini Parnass: phyona - how did you hear about ucantu?
[10:36] Lydia Milner: there is a tutorial on using hte free media player in sl http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=431
[10:36] Lydia Milner: that might helpf ornow
[10:36] Lydia Milner: for now
[10:36] Phyona Masala accepted your inventory offer.
[10:36] Phyona Masala: I just found it thru search
[10:36] Phyona Masala: but it is very interesting to me
[10:36] Phyona Masala: since I work in this area in RL
[10:37] Phyona Masala accepted your inventory offer.
[10:37] Phyona Masala accepted your inventory offer.
[10:37] Shakini Parnass: what organization are you working with?
[10:37] Phyona Masala: I used to be at the Canadian Museum of Nature
[10:37] Phyona Masala: Now at Parks Canada
[10:38] You: cool, A Canadian!
[10:38] Lydia Milner: Ah how lovely, where in Canada is that, east or west or central?
[10:38] Phyona Masala: Well, I'm personally in Quebec
[10:38] Shakini Parnass: your input on the projects would be most appreciated!
[10:38] Phyona Masala: But Parks Canada manages parks and historic sites across the country
[10:38] You: fantastique!
[10:38] Phyona Masala: so we have, well, dozens of museums
[10:38] Phyona Masala: i can't count them all!
[10:39] Lydia Milner: wow,t hat sounds great!
[10:39] Phyona Masala: yeah. dream job
[10:39] Phyona Masala: :)
[10:39] Shakini Parnass: were you curating exhibits?
[10:39] Phyona Masala: I'm a multimedia person. Mostly video, but getting into new media now as well
[10:39] Lydia Milner: :)
[10:40] Ulysse Alexandre: do you are involved with the Virtual Museum Canada?
[10:40] Phyona Masala: just as a content contributor
[10:40] Phyona Masala: some of my colleagues worked for the VMC
[10:40] Ulysse Alexandre: interesting
[10:41] Shakini Parnass: did any of you hear about the contest that was hosted by USC?
[10:41] Lydia Milner: no?
[10:41] Lydia Milner: ALisa and Dancers, I am preparing you anotecard with what I ahve on streaming
[10:41] Ulysse Alexandre: yes
[10:41] Dancers Yao: thanks
[10:41] Alisa Cleanslate: thanks
[10:41] Ulysse Alexandre: the Okapi project you mean?
[10:42] Ulysse Alexandre: from the University of Berkeley
[10:42] Shakini Parnass: they had a similar type of experiment to this, soliciting projects to be prototyped in SL - there was a prize of 100,000L
[10:42] Ulysse Alexandre: ?
[10:42] Shakini Parnass: this was with the university of southern california (USC)
[10:42] Shakini Parnass: there were 5 projects that people proposed and the voting just ended yesterday
[10:42] Shakini Parnass: unless they offer an extension
[10:42] Ulysse Alexandre: an other project then
[10:43] Lydia Milner: hmm, five is not much, how many were they looknig for?
[10:43] Shakini Parnass: one of them was a native american project based in red rocks
[10:43] Shakini Parnass: i don't know
[10:43] Shakini Parnass: they had a grant from the macarthur foundation
[10:44] Shakini Parnass: but one of the developers told me that 100,000L would equal approximately 40 hours of a programmers time
[10:44] Shakini Parnass: they'd be given land for a 3 month period
[10:44] Shakini Parnass: and after that, they'd be on their own
[10:45] Phyona Masala: nice deal
[10:45] Lydia Milner: its about $400 US
[10:45] Shakini Parnass: one of the projects that seemed particularly well-suited to SL was a project related to disabilities
[10:45] Lydia Milner: oh that sounds interseting
[10:45] Shakini Parnass: i don't know any programmers who work for $10 an hour!!
[10:46] Phyona Masala: true!
[10:46] Lydia Milner: lol
[10:46] Dancers Yao: How do you learn about the USC or similar projects?
[10:46] Shakini Parnass: someone sent me an email the other day, thats how i found out about it
[10:47] Shakini Parnass: i can forward it to you, but if i open my email browser SL will crash
[10:47] Shakini Parnass: ARGH
[10:47] Dancers Yao: thanks - I'll look it up
[10:48] Shakini Parnass: does anyone else have anything specific that the group could help out with today?
[10:48] Lydia Milner: i'm just doing this notecard...
[10:49] Lydia Milner gave you How to stream video to SL - extract.
Lydia's notecard
excerpt from Second Life by Brian A White
p 342
in the media tab of your about land window you can enter a URL for streaming video. The URL must be to a stream that is Quicktime compatable, which includes .mov files and various other formats too.
to be able to see the movie stream you selected, SL has to know wihch surface you want to display it on. This is done by designating a texture as the 'media texture' in the media tab of your about land window. Be sure to select a texture that you don't use elsewhere on the same land or the stream will be displayed htere too! Once the media texture is set in the media tab, you then apply the same texture to an object that you want ot use as the movie screen, and it's ready to play.
With a streaming movie URL set, a small play button with a volume slider will apeer at the bottom of your screen, just above the build button. Once you press play the screen shoudl play the movie for you. Sometimes it can take a little while to get started, so be patient. If you have trouble try testing the URL outside of second life in the Quicktime player itself. If it works in Quicktime it shoudl work inworld too.
[10:49] You: ty, Lydia
[10:49] Shakini Parnass: we can have stephe post this conversation with the info on the website as well
[10:49] Shakini Parnass: thanx lydia
[10:49] Ulysse Alexandre: thx, Lydia
[10:50] Lydia Milner: May need a server to save it on though, unless the wiki can be used?
[10:50] Alisa Cleanslate: thanks, Lydia for the notecard
[10:50] Dancers Yao: Is there a way to bring objects from the inventory without their going to the ceiling?
