Design-a-Challenge
Design a challenge for youth grades 5 through 12 that introduces and reinforces the scientific process with a hands-on project geared to solve a real-world problem. Your entry should suggest a real-world problem and its likely solutions that could be built as prototypes by students as their entry into the Tech Challenge competition.
-
Power to the People!
- Demonstrate how multiple sources of alternative energy could be used in a home, especially in a Third-World setting.
-
Killer asteroid deflector on the moon
- To save the Earth from a catastrophic asteroid hit, design a robotically-steerable, high-energy deflector-beam gun to be deployed on the moon, having the ability to nudge any problem asteroid off-course well before it becomes a threat, and with the entire moon installation to be assembled by robots (humans can help back on Earth).
-
Water Fall
- The concept of my project is to create a small creative coloreful water foutin.
-
Balloon Bot Challenge
- Using the long stretchy 'animal' balloons construct a gripper/positioner that is capable of grabbing balloons and connecting them together while contending with the "fat sticky fingers" problem. That is to say that grabbers are atom sized or larger. Any atoms one might try to pick up would be difficult to acquire and perhaps even more difficult to release.

Rescue Trapped Miners: The Mobile Technologies Challenge
- A next-generation mobile device will collect and transmit live-saving information related to miners who are trapped in underground mines.
-
Avalanche life saver
- Create an invention to save the life of someone caught in an avalanche.
-
survival in cardboard
- How can people survive using cheap materials to build and live?
-
Solar powered filterless water filter
- We will design a water purification system that uses no filters, but ionizes the pollutants in water and pulls them to a polarized metal plate.
-
How to remove nuclear waste
- This project designed to assist in finding ways to remove toxic waste from power plants.
-
GoGreen Washing Machine Challenge
- how can we stop using too much electric!
-
Lift 6 kilograms using only a fan.
- Being able to lift a lot of weight effortlessly.
-
The lift
- An extremely basic idea where the rotation of one object causes the rotation of another part of the same object without needing gears.
-
Habitat 2019
- Design elements of the NASA lunar habitat and vehicles
-
Mousetrap Mines
- Students compete to remove mousetrap 'land mines' and learn something about a real life problem.
-
Designing the skyscraper of the future.
- You a designing the sky scraper of the future...but you don't have much material.
-
Saving Jack and Jill.
- Save Jack and Jill from that terrible fate by making a machine to carry the pail of water for them.
-
Find under what you cant reach
- find under the mess
