full grown
Step into the shoes of a KickStart farmer and see how much 'water' you can pump, enough for one stalk of corn? Enough for a family? Enough to feed the whole village?

The KickStart Pump
Yes
Walk past the now disused well and into the barren field. Step up onto the KickStart Moneymaker Pump and keep stepping. As you continue to step and pump 'water' ropes of blue neon lights will light up as they run through the barren field, illustrating the water being pumped around the field. As you pump more, crops 'grow up' out of the soil, and if you pump even more, the faces of a family appear, and then you can see the whole village on backlit panels - more of which will light up the more you pump, illustrating how the water grows the crops that feed the people that create the village, allowing its' increased economy. One wall of this exhibit shows a map of the world, and as you pump lights light up to show where real farmers are out there kickstart pumping just like you!

Thanks for your comments, Shakini.
I have been thinking about the timescale and how to map this to the visitor's time at the exhibit. Two pumps in the exhibit would allow an element of competition between friends, for example, who can 'bring to life' the most? I thought of something like a scrolling narrative (as speakers use at podiums, the see-thru ones) which as you pump and grow say 1/2 the field, the scroll says 'a farmer using the kickstart pump would pump for an avg. of 1/2hr per day to grow 1/2 field of corn', or whatever the timescales are. I have a draft diagram but would like to bounce some ideas around tonight before moving any further forward. Any ideas you have would be much appreciated, Marie.
