ONIL Cookstove

by Rob Stephenson last modified 2008-04-24 14:30

In Guatemala, women cook over dangerous open fires inside their homes. The fires can cause respiratory illness, eye infections, and severe burns. And people suffer debilitating back injuries from gathering the tremendous amounts of wood needed for cooking.

Donald O'Neal knew there had to be a safer way to cook, so he developed the ONIL stove (video). It is made of strong, inexpensive concrete with an insulating ceramic lining and a steel chimney, and its design is suited to traditional Guatemalan cooking methods. O'Neal's design saves 70% of the wood usually used for cooking, emits only 1/20th of the carbon monoxide, and protects the whole family from burns.
